IS hardcapping!

So where does that leave us then??

Is there anywhere that still allows uncapped local access or is this the death of local as we know it??

Surely it was always a matter of when and not if they would instigate the capping?

agreed - after teklom screwed SA over, IS hardcapping was just a matter of time. Up until now, we have had some free bw.

indeed. You guys are obviously not as bummed as i am about all this. Take it you dont do so much of the downloading then bwana and moederloos??

THIS SUX !!!

Why couldnt IS leave local uncapped not like its costing them a lot of money for local bandwidth. And we can only use it during the night anywayz if they want to hardcap local they should give us better speeds during the day.

While I do think its a pity in general you have to admit that its only fair that you are getting what you've paid for - that the previous X number of months was uncapped was a bonus.

The question is - how much did the high end users (and I'm talking 30+ gb for the sake of this qn only) influence IS's decision to implement the cap? Or, alternatively, was it more to do with them having to deal with loads of ppl subscribing - ie oversubscription?

EDIT - currenty I get all my content from overseas via UUnet and SAIX accounts - HOWEVER, I am still looking into switching over to IS if uunets service doesnt improve in the near future regardless of IS capping. That assumes IS sorts out their news group issues that have been reported in other threads.

I am bummed - no doubt. But, I know what I signed up for, so I cannot blame IS.

Oh, and BTW, I have averaged 80GB per month for the last few months, so I do use a bit ;)

EDIT: And, if need be, I will buy another 3GB/30GB account - news.is.co.za is worth it, and saves me a giganews sub.

Yes i do see that it is fair for them to implement it as it was in the contract that we all signed with our isps when we first signed up with IS, but it still sucks big time.

Telkom is at the heart of the problem, not IS.

I would go with oversubscription as a reason rather than 'abusers'. I just dont think that there are that many people out there that do THAT much downloading every month. I managed 90 gigs in feb and march, Am now hovering around 25 for april but have stopped all dls for fear of the cap. I cannot afford to pay any more for my internet than i already am :(

Right, Agreed. So we are basically in the same boat. What are you going to do now then? Just buy more accounts? Download less? These seem to be the only options left to us now that noone else offers uncapped local...

use some of the 300GBs i have already got, lol@me :D

Eish If they cuttuing ppl off then I guess thats unfortunate. Hmm I guess i'll get 2 more accounts then and maybe a Telkom.

Someone asked earlier about me getting uncapped after being capped.

I noticed my rate definitly being limited to 1-2KB/s after reaching 14GB but yesterday it seems its back up downloading internationaly at 20-30KB/sec, definitly not capped. Will check this evening again too see if it was maybe just a fluke.

Doesn't this feel like the whole 1st of Nov saga all over again :(

So whats the next best option now to do 100 gigs? 3X2GB/28GB accounts?

LOL it hasn't quite reached the cost for that Taiwan trip quite yet. :D

assuming you use 100GB, then 4*2/28 is needed.

I find it hard to use more than 80 though, so 3*2/28 should be enough.
(3GB per day = 90GB per month - discount daytime usage as it is very slow - using 512)

ROFL @ Moederloos
well atleast they give 30GB-Acc_SizeGB bw local free unlike saix who charge for it.. if only they could seperate local from international, then it would be worthwhile if you don't mind latency.

My usuage is usualy between 70-100GB. 114 is my highest ever sofar but I think telkom accidently gave me 1mbit or something for 2 days during that month. ;)

Also, remember:

1) A decent quality tv programme - 45 minutes - is around 400MB. Five of those to 2GB and 50 to 20GB. 50 shows = +-40 hours of viewing.
2) A PC game is around 2GB - prob less. = 40+ hours of play
3) Music / books etc is hundreds of hours per GB (thousands for books!)

so 100GB per month = WAY too much time on your hands! :D

For R200 per month, 30GB is fair (R6ish per GB). Pity it is local only though.
