Is HD-PVR decoder worth it

It's not as simple as you make it out to be. I believe DStv pays royalties for supplying a PVR service. They also have to put content protection on the AV outputs (macrovision), so you are not supposed to be able to record to HTPC's or HDD recorders (this is obviously not very secure). Bottom line is, MC are not making these rules. It is made by the people supplying the content.

Couple of points ...

If DStv were paying royalties, then why is it R65 no matter what package you are on? If you are on Compact or even Easyview, who is getting the whole R65?

And they do not use Macrovision. They use CGMS-A, which should allow you to record ONCE onto a modern HDD recorder, and then transfer that recording from the HDD on to a CGMS-A compatible disc.

PVR is really awesome, only watch the HD channels, but all the extras such as rewind and pause, great for sport and things like record and dstv on demand, worth the extra moola.

if you are going to go the decoder route, get a PVR. i use it a lot !

I never said that...

OK... I am missing something here. What did you not say? I merely wanted to know if it is possible to copy content saved on the PVR. I think I know the answer to this question... I merely wanted to confirm it.

it is but good luck in finding someone who`s willing to share.

Also confused by this statement... Someone willing to share what? How to copy content from PVR or share what they have saved on the PVR. If it is the latter, no worries mate, my monthly sub is already R624pm - XtraView... Just have to decide whether or not to get HD PVR. ;)

Can I install this HD PVR decoder myself?

My cousin did it for himself... He did not even know about the LNB 4'clock position requirement. :) He told me that he drove around the block and noticed that all LNBs were positioned the same. Surely you can do it yourself... ;)
