I know this topic has been adressed here numerous times but I really need to know from you technically inclined ppl if irc can and does work with iburst? I know it can because prior launch it did.
I need to be connected to 24/7 as I am running and hosting 2 Trivia Rooms.
I have had a lot of disconnection problems since the launch. I use windows xp proff. serv pack1, and my firewall is disabled.

I will really appreciate it if someone might shed some light on this (I have taken it up with Luis as well but he can not find a suitable solution) Any ideas from you guys?

ok yes it does, and the IRC problems are not experienced by everyone all the time. If I had to diagnose the problem I would say its the port shaping combined with the bandwith manager (which is why it never happened prior to the launch). I have no idea how long it will take to be fixed so I have discovered a workaround (its what I do best).

It's really very simple, when you connect the bandwith manager takes time to cripple connections (wether you're capped or not), this window period varies from about 25 seconds to 2 minutes, I guess it depends on server load. Once the bandwith manager and the port shaping work together you can be sure some non prioritised services like IRC will be throttled so bad they will be rendered unusable. So all you need to do is establish the connection before the bandwith manager kicks in, so connect to the internet, as soon as you connect before you do anything connect to IRC (or any service giving trouble), because the connection is established before the bandwith manager kicks in it will be full speed. Try it, it works.

By the way for the "abusers" you can also use this trick to get full speed when you're capped, I won't type out a specific guide or anything, you'll just have to play around with it :)

And don't disable your firewall. You will catch something nasty.

Yes. Sort of,

I had problems with VNC this morning. Acc. to helpdesk there is a throttle on P2P connections. I'm not sure if IRC fall into this cat, but if it does it will explain your problems.

The only things iBurst is suitable for is browsing the web and sending and receiving email. I did not have any success using any other protocols, they either don't connect at all or disconnect few moments after you connect. So I am damn sure you will have more success using dial-up modem or ISDN.

iBurst is a parody of internet connection, targeting the retarted part of the SA population, which does not know what that Mbit thing means and don't have a clue that the internet can be used for other purposes besides browsing p0rn sites. To be more precise, the internet is for people like Thami Mtshali (see IT Web) and his retarted relatives.

ok first off, the word you are looking for is retarded

next thing, is the 3GB package is more suited for HTTP, POP3 etc etc, lets not forget there is an unshaped package, the 9GB package that will work fine with all other protocols and not just the priority ones. Also this isn't the way it will always be, they need time to fix thier bandwith manager, it should have been done by now, granted but once they do fix it, whenever that will be you should gain 64K speeds on non priority protocols with the smaller than 9GB packages

Slim, how certain are you that 9gig is unshaped, isn't it still shaped, but allows p2p activity? This is the million dollar question for me!!

sorry about the spelling! They should have added spell checker here!

I did not see on their web site saying that protocols like ICQ, MSN and IRC won't work on any but the most expensive package. I didn't realise they generate so much traffic that WBS will go bankrupt if they let me chat a bit. This situation is for more than 2 weeks now. If they can't fix it in 2 weeks: 1. they are incompetent 2. the product should have not been released with such deffects

swordfish: well you didn't see it on thier site because its a temporary issue

bicpen: with the 9GB package they remove packet shaping, right now we have packet shaping and port shaping, thats the problem, if you just have port shaping you're fine

sword : they are supposed to work, but their shaping is up to **** , thats why i was wondering weather the 9gig is unshaped or just allows p2p. If it’s unshaped, it implies all our troubles goes awe.....

I am not considering the 9 GB package - my philosophy is that if something does not work as it is supposed to work, it should be fixed, rather than the customers pay more to get around the problem

So, from my experience the temporary things are the most permanent ones - so do you know when is this going to be fixed? It looks to me that the admins of the iBurst network are just now starting to read "Networking for dummies" ...

well it doesn't work for you, so its understandable you're pissed off but it does work for me, it has for quite some time and barring the recent suspension thing I have had a good experience with it, so I'll be on the 9GB for sure

Slimothy, are you sure that's wise? - I would totally wait a few weeks to get 100% clarity on the WBS iBurst policy wrt the 64kBits/s throttle issue - certainly before letting WBS know that they can expect more money from you for a package that is AFAIK untried/untested and probably does not even exist from a WBS system implementation POV...

What I'm saying is, I don't think anything iBurst is worth it until WBS sort out their systems!

Thanks for the tip Slimothy, it's a trick I have used on other mediums as well :-D
