Oh I forgot we have clouds again over Jhb and the satellite link is problematic ;-)

eish, I'm trying to connect to a MS-VPN through a SAIX ISP and it's literally crawling like a snail - I wait sometimes 1-2 minutes for a response. I even tried using PayVPN which Telkom has recently started blocking on port 110, so Clipse switched the port to the 1194 (which is suppose to be a UDP port) but most times I can't even connect to the MS-VPN server that I need to.

Telkom?

IS' bandwidth is rubbish even in their magnificently expensive hosting facilities. That's why I moved our servers out of there.

The only IS package worth using is the expensive $$$
Business 512k or 1024k Fiber package if you look at the
traceroutes very good. Full 512k from any where.

kilos, the ping response may be good (but what you post is no better than I'm getting on SAIX ADSL), but that doesn't mean their bandwidth is any good.

Example: server1 sits in IS, we're paying something to the tune of 35c per mb for a supposedly very low contention 100mbit connection. I download a package from the Irish sourceforge mirror. trickles down at about 130 kbyte/s.

Server2 sits in Hetzner, shares *one* 100mbit connection with the entire server room (I'm guessing at least 200 servers). Download the same package at the same time from the same server, it comes down at more than 300 kbyte/s.

Now, I download stuff from our servers all the time. From Hetzner, it comes at a steady 100 kbyte/s odd (1mbit ADSL at work). From IS, it hardly ever hits 40 kbyte/s, and it's not steady, it goes up to 40, then slows down gradually to bout 10, then jumps up again, slows down again, repeat repeat repeat.

Oh, and did I mention hetzner charges only 9c p/mb over the 5gb included in our hosting package?

IS can keep their bandwidth for all I care.

Thanks koffiejunkie, the IS over fibre package is at full speed
of 512k and that has been tested.
The chap who has the IS Fibre package is from Switzerland and very particular
and very much used to European internet speeds so he is quite impressed
He needs to connect via Citrix to his server farm in CH and has tried
all connectivity packages available to all the Tier 1 ISP in SA over the last 3 years.
Router No 6 back to normal latency.

* 2 Mb link with 4000 IP's for R6000/month (Switzerland)
* SAIX 64k Gold with 8 IP'x for R6000/month (South Africa)

IS DSL 512k over Satellite

This discussion has gone around and around and now I have to find
another solution as this connectivity is DISGUSTING
(oversubscription), the ideal is to spend R2700 and get the SAT3
fiber conenction until that gets over subscribed.

They do, it's called diginet :D Very attractive product actually it's just that price *sigh*

As for IS, well if they *HAD* 100% uptime (meaning the network wasn't down every other day, aka 2kb's international) then they would just suck very badly(I mean common, when they are 100% working I can't watch streaming video's and my downloads NEVER run at full line capacity). But this constant downtime puts them down there with piets network in the back yard that's piggybacking off of jannie's (his friend from next door) GPRS powered Internet connection. It suck's and the only have decent thing they had, i.e the news-server has completely gone to hell aswell.

Because of my complaining they are offering me a DSL 512 over Fiber
package as a trial for the month, trying to tempt you because
of their crap service on the satellite.

For what kind of price? Because the ONLY reason I'm on IS is because of the 30gig Local.
