is IS shaped or unshaped?

i used to get great p2p speeds with IS, now its been dog slow this last month.
I called webafrica, and they say IS is, and always has been shaped.

i go onto the webafrica site, and where you look at all the account details, they have now removed the little tick vs cross for the "shaped" feature...

whats going on? is IS shaped or unshaped?
 
IS accounts are NOT shaped, as far as I am aware.
 
I remember MrBEEP saying before that IS does sometimes implement shaping, depending on network load.
 
What is the difference between shaped and unshaped accounts?

Is it:

Shaped - If you download torrents you will never get the full speed line? At what speed are torrents throttled at?

Unshaped - Everything at full line speed?

Shaped = torrents at full speed if nobody else is on the network. When somebody else comes on, it depends on what they do. If they request something that has higher priority than your torrent, you get to wait till their request is answered.

Shaping is where they give different types of acccess requests different priority levels. Typically, normal browsing requests [HTTP] are given highest priority, so your torrent will be running 100% until somebody goes and browses a site, and then you are forced to wait for the other person. Exactly how long you have to wait depends on how the shaping is configured.

Unshaped = on this network, if you were the only person on it, your torrent runs at 100%. If somebody else gets onto the network, and request bandwidth, yours drops to 50%, 50% to the other person, and 50% to you.

i.e. unhaped is equal sharing. All people suffer equally. And .. more importantly, because the software that does the shaping is not there, you will experience low latency, which is ideal for fast moving games.
 
Hey stoke, while I agree with most of what you are saying, it doesnt seem to apply to Telkom unshaped. Ie, if I buy unshaped bw I know its going to be quicker than shaped bw. If I was fighting with someone else for that bw I should in theory get a slower speed if the other person is a bw hog.

For me, SAIX shaped and unshaped means:

Shaped: A sub-par service released to maximize profits at the users expense.
Unshaped: Vanilla bandwidth as it should be.
 
remember this is Unshaped Satelite speeds and not unshaped Sat3 cable !!!

they are not 100% unshapped as pointed out - 'when it suits them', they are otherwise no.
 
SAIX unshaped is SAT3 unshaped. IS unshaped is any body's guess.

W1z .. yea .. the unshaped network is not as congested as the shaped one, so it performs better, and, like I said, not having the shaping software as part of the setup improves the latency, so, once again, it performs better.
 
SAIX does not seem to use SAT3 most of the time for ADSL users. If you do a tracert you'll see most of the time we break out in Hong Kong indicating that ADSL users are being routed via SAFE now.... I have noticed international latencies are much higher now compared to the latencies I had when I first got ADSL in 2005.
 
shaped...just checked again now it is being routed via hk. I haven't checked unshaped saix lately would be interesting to see if that is still being routed via london.
 
When using HTTP - what sort of differences in latency and download speeds are we talking about when comparing shaped and unshaped?

And what sort of differences again when comparing SAIX and IS?
 
If it's being routed via HK was that line fixed properly after that quake?
 
SAFE wasn't damaged during the quake... it was the cables between Japan and the US.
