Is It Dangerous To Plug Generator Directly Into Plugpoint

I have heard that I can make an extension with a plug on each side and then go directly into a plug point in my home. Then, switch the earth leakage off on the DB board and fire up the generator which, apparently, will then power the house - obviously not the entire house but parts of it. Is this not totally dangerous and if not, then what would be the correct steps?

It is illegal, and dangerous.

You need to get the generator wired into your DB board with a decent transfer switch.

That's why. Its called a dead-mans cable. and its extremely dangerous. Nothing will be earthed. And a rule in electronics say that no live points should be open. I've done the same a few times. Have 30 m of 2.5 cable at home for the backup generator. But next month I'm having a socket wired into my DB with a change over switch and a suitable plug.

Uncorrect.

Just because ELP is off doesn't mean nothing's earthed.

ELP cuts both live and neutral, but not the house's earth feed.

However, under generator with a dead man's cable, you have no earth leakage protection.

It can be done. But if your main switch is on and the power comes back on, you will have some massive fireworks :D

If your main switch is on and your generator is on, your generator will be massively overloaded and either stop, trip or burn out.

Yeah basically it is illegal and that is why it should not be done.

You can get a switch over breaker installed. It is not so expensive compared to a actual switch like switch over switch. Getting it wired by a qualified electrician could cost you a couple of grand though.
