Hi. Is it possible to actually SEND information via the DSTV dish? I remember with Infosat users could download at high speed, but relied on dialup for sending.

Was the a legal thing, or something that couldn't be done?

technically you can send. for example on the interactive channels, you're issuing requests for instructions to be executed and the required information downloaded. when you issue a request, technically you're sending information. i dunno about the legal aspects of transmitting info other than that

Highflyer - there is currently no way a DSTV dish can send out information. You must have the modem connected to enable two-way communications.

DSTV have plenty of concurrent streams coming in. For interactive channels it just selects a different stream.

Who cares

If you want and can do it DO-IT knock yourself out.

It must be. Carte Blanche is doing a survey through their interactive feature, collecting info in this manner. So it must be possible to transmit info.

The survey is not sending information to anyone, based on your options you choose, a code is generated. you then SMS this code and that's how they're tallying up the results.

The dish is a receiving only dish - not a transmitting one - With High gain transmission dishes (such as those used in VStar and VSat solutions), information (including Internet Connectivity - at a premium) can be sent/received. Sentech and Telkom both have V(Sat/Star) offerings - I believe MWeb is offering it as well - supplied by Sentech which owns Infosat.

you can do it also by connecting 230 volts to your dish. A firmware change will also allow you to use your Dstv decoder as a radio telescope

heh...

of course - a hardware upgrade will let you use it as a vibrator...

It seems like DSTV have thrown away the concept of the DSTV modem - I think the only interactive service that uses it is the TV Messaging. And of course the reason why they are using the SMS the code to ##### option is because they are capatelist pigs (like Telskum) and want to make money off the gullable public.

Ahh, ok, that makes sense.

for the interactive bit, like the email and stuff, you use that blue keyboard thingy and its blue box ( which is just a modem in disguise ). It then uses a dialup modem to send the info to multichoice. Billing for pay per view works the same.
You can use that dish for transmitting, but not with that lnb or that decoder. Ie, if youre going to hack a transmitter then these nice dishes to start with

Attach a power cable to the dish and turn it on, it make nice sparks and if you're lucky it'll blow up the dish (amazing fireworks display)
