I want to port my existing number (currently out of contract on Telkom) to an existing MTN contract. i.e. I want to effectively change the phone number on my existing MTN package. Is this possible?

I know number change was possible on an MTN contract in the past. Just not sure if you can use the prepaid number as the new number.
To simplify it rather 1st port the Telkom number to MTN prepaid, that can be done overnight. (Did this 2 weeks ago).
