Is it worth having a VPN

It will stop your ISP from spying on you, and websites you visit from knowing what your real IP address is.

Your browsing history will still be on your PC unless you delete it.

It will not prevent you getting virusses.

Yes.
For all the reasons netcruiser mentioned, and the fact that you can use it to get around the dumb region blocking by Netflix and Amazon.

It will only stop your ISP from spying on you if used correctly. If you leak DNS, they will still know which sites you visit

Yes you can then browse all the transgender midget animal porn you want.

If you use wifi hot spots from your phone then worth using a VPN. I don't trust these "free" wifi hotspots.

A big problem with VPN"s is they say they don't keep logs but can you really believe that. If you really don't want to be traced then use TOR or a VPN from a reliable VPN provider.

For normal users no. My VPN is setup on my Mikrotik but I hardly use the feature. I have my RDP connection set to allow a certain port through. Connecting to the VPN just for home stuff is a waste

Not true. If you run your own OpenVPN server at home, you can connect to this when using public WiFi to browse securely. Also, if you run things like IP cameras this helps - these cameras have real crap firmware with unpatched security holes - then you can connect them to your LAN only, and use the VPN to access the camera on your LAN as well

If you're not a normal user, and visit a site like sapunter.net, you might need a VPN on some service providers. :whistling:

Wait ....do ISP's spy on us? Do they do https and deep packet inspection? And, why would they? Yeah, I get they could do protocol throttling and shaping and that sort of thing but how and more especially why would they do content interrogation?

I speak for myself when I say I don't know and I don't care

ISP's can spy on you but they generally don't because there is little point.

They might start spying on specific users if there are warrants from the government instructing them to do so though.

3 practical uses for "Normal" users:

1. protect yourself from public wifi hospots, ie airport, hotels etc

2. Remain anonymous when downloading torrents

3. streaming

I once read that your device (PC/phone) shares it's unique serial (MAC address?) with the site that it visits as well so somebody can always track you if you used your device on another website without using the VPN...they basically match your serial nr when surfing on VPN to the same serial number when you logged onto Facebook etc..

True? And if so, can this device number/ serial number be faked or blocked from being shared with the site you are visiting? Out of interest offcourse. :p
