is it worth it?

Pity the kit lenses are all the ones I'm not interested in. If they bundled it with a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, it would have been a no-brainer for me.

I second that, the 17-85mm is not very aspiring. If you can afford it, get the faster 17-55, or even a 35mm prime.

Believe me, glass is really where you should be 1st investing.

Why didnt you buy the 17-55 when you bought the 50D?

I'm sure I'd find a use for the 17-85 - I still manage to find uses for the 18-55 kit lens.

Who should be? I'm in a good place right now with what's in my bag. What I need is another camera and asap.

I'm going to get the 17-55. I *had* a 30mm f/2 - loved it. Sadly it was forcefully redistributed (along with my 24-105L).

You're clearly new here. This is the choir you're preaching to. bwana has some enviable glass in his collection.

Price. The 50D body and 17-55mm lens together would have been about £1600 - more than my budget could handle at the time.

Nothing wrong with the 17-85IS, but when bought separately is overpriced. I have the 18-55II; now that's great value for money!

Almost as good value as the 50mm f/1.8

If you make a recording of yourself, and post it in the announcements section, you will win a second-hand D90 + 18-105VR!

Damn! I'm derailing the thread (and talking to myself).

No bwana, it's not worth it. You have a 16-35, and that is really a FF lens.

Did I say D90? (dude, I love my D90) I meant you can win a... WTF am I talking about? It's 00:30. I must get to bed! Cheers!

btw - that 16-35 also works really well hand in hand with the 2x tc.

Well if that's the case, it would be even more of a reason not to buy a kit lens.
SA Camera sells the body only for 12,699.00 - I would have got the 50D with the kit lens for more than R1000 less.

Why not save an extra R3000 (230 Pounds) and just get the body? (ref amazon.co.uk)

Or if money isn't too tight, go for the 5DII instead. I can't praise mine enough.

Primarily because I'd only knackered my 400D the day before and wasnt considering a 50D until I saw it in the LHR departure lounge.

The cheapest I'm finding the 50D body for on Amazon.co.uk is £849.99 - pretty much what Dixons was charging for the body with lens.

Back to looking at the 1DMk3 - I've just found out a friend from the US might be in Berlin the same time I am . . . :)
