Anyone know if Laurent Gbagbo is still alive since the french helicopters shot the crap outta his residence the other day?

Im trying to find a news article since then, that directly quotes him since after the attack on his residence?
 
Yea i had tea with him over the weekend.

Not a cool place. Stuffy and full of dust but the tea was awesome.

Are the French and UN fighting alongside the rebels? Same story as in Libya ...just different commodity...:erm:

I dont care, Laurent Gbagbo is trying to create a civil war to protect his own private interests. Im sure people in the Ivory Coast are over that crap. I dont care if the french want to protect their own interests, Laurent Gbagbo kinda asked for this by directly attacking the UN base.

There is basically no war or conflict that is fought for anything but individuals private interests. This includes the ANC. As someone from the ANC has said, they didnt fight the NATS to be poor.

The French had to respond because the hamstrung AU were just protecting Laurent Gbagbo`s interests and not coming to the aid of the people. There were some exceptions in the AU, but countries like South Africa dropped the ball and let the people of Ivory Coast down (heck, Zuma got boo`d there).

But Outtarra is said to have won the election by a mere 54% which means 46% of Ivorians did not vote for him. Those will soon turn into rebels and the UN must pick a different side again:confused:
Problem with this kind of solution to conflicts is that we will never rid Africa of civil wars.

Last I heard Gbagbo was holed up good and proper in that bunker complex of his and they were fighting through a compound of some sort to get to him.
 
Just been announced that he's been detained by French Special Forces.

Of course they don't otherwise there wouldn't be the current conflict. Power sharing deal seems like a more logical resolution. Gbabo's defeated soldiers will become the new rebels and we are back to civil war again. Sigh!

No, thats a terrible idea, it was a complete fail in Zimbabwe and has done nothing, but entrench Mugabe and lead to more suffering of Zimbabweans.
Gbabo's defeated soldiers will become the new rebels and we are back to civil war again. Sigh!

I highly doubt it. If you had listened to the opinion of people on the street in Ivory Coast you will see theyre darn tired of Laurent Gbagbo. Even his supporters (not the paid mercanries that have been fighting back)... his supporters on the street have been asking him to give up without a fight. Laurent Gbagbo insisted he was going to make the country ungovernable if they tried to remove him from power.

Now he has been captured!!! Hooray! Now he will hopefully face something people in Africa are unfamiliar with... Justice!

If he no longer has support on the ground then it's all good, otherwise my point still stands.

He has very little amongst the people, his own supporters included. They are tired.. tired of the fighting. Which is why Laurent Gbagbo had to hire mercenaries and why he tried to get his youth brigade working again.. problem was his youth had grown up and the current lot are really not as invested.

When Zuma was on the ground there trying to broke peace, the people mobbed his car and shouted to him "tell the truth, tell the truth".

If he had accepted defeat he could now be sitting pretty in retirement (no doubt with fat piles of loot in offshore banks). But no, he had to be stubborn and now look at him. Scores dead and his ass in jail. Idiot.

Good i am glad he chose that option. Sad for the dead but at least nobody will foot his bill.

and we're repeatedly told these leaders are rational people who's primary aim is always self preservation. For example glowing Ahemi in Iran, he would never go so far as to endanger himself and the Ayatollahs regime :rolleyes:
