I find it silly that the first x gigs you transfer counts as international. Idealy local and international usage should be seperated, but I can understand there could be technical limitations.

So how about a local-only account? I'm sure there's a market for a reasonably priced uncapped or large cap local account. Has anyone run this past IS yet?

I don't think there are any technical limitations, so I'm not sure why IS doesn't do it. Just set up some routing tables, for example, so that all local goes to one specific gateway, all international to another specific gateway on IS's end, then count all the bytes flowing through each gateway and cap accordingly when local reaches 27Gb and international reaches 3Gb.

I think its cause they don't know how to justify cost(Saix/IS) of such account without being shot down as overpriced. With International Saix always just claims international is expensive etc. I still think Local access should be almost free to encourage local content in form of hosting etc but they probably look at as a waste of money to be made hence local cap.

Think of it like this, why doesnt Hosting datacentres in SA do the same, charge for international and local different cost?

Same theory applies here, I think local access via Telkom billing work out the same as their own international access.

But yet IS can offer us 27gb local access for the money u pay on a 3gb saix account so i can only see loal access must be free except for the maintenance that needs to be done

I doubt local is free, but certainly cost less than international.

I think the reason why IS offer 30GIG local got to do with entering the market and they saw SAIX would not offer this.

There is still running costs on local loops, Diginet line rentals/month fees to cover etc. Remember everything got to travel locally somewhere, before reaching a international router. There has to be costs involved, how much? Im not sure, but obviously it should be less than international.

yup .. it does cost, but how much ? Also i think if they produce such an account there will be very direct questions vs cost of international etc and also people will use the cheap account and proxy out with cheaper services(not really though) but importantly there goes vpn-via-adsl as a money product for them.

I would LOVE a local only account. It opens som many possiblities for me......

Please organise local only....

local only accounts would be really great for small businesses that have small branches that need some sort of communication for doing inter branch stock balancing....
