Our one cat was unfortunately hit by a car a short while ago (2 weeks). Her brother, Hamlet, 3yrs old, is still with us.

We recently brought (3 days ago) a new kitten into the house. Poor Hamlet isn't taking to the changes very well at all. He is usually a very friendly and affectionate cat but since his sister died he has been pining for her, meowing an searching the house. He is also very aggro towards Sputnik (our youngest and newest 4 legged family member).

What can we do? Is he just adjusting ? Will he relax? How can we make it easier for him?

The animal ambulance paramedic vet (whatever they're called) brought Hamlet out to smell his sisters body before they took her away for cremation. Apparently this was so that he wouldn't pine - I dont think it worked though :(

Any ideas? It's so heartbreaking to lose a pet and even more so now to see how unhappy Hamlet is...

3 days isn't enough time. Give it 2-3 weeks for things to settle.

Give it time. He will come around. For now he had a loss and an intruder in the works. As soon as he realise that you accepted the intruder then he will adapt!

Get Feliway from the vet and spray around the house 3 times a day. It helps.

Hamlet will get over it. Your mistake was to bring a new kitten into the equation so soon. Now Hamlet has to deal with two things at once which may be a bit overwhelming.

I don't think you have to worry about the cat getting over the loss of the other cat. There is an intruder in the house and he is careful. This will go away with time. No problem.

I hope you're right! I think part of the problem is that new kitty is still reaaaally tiny. Friends of the family told us their neighbours were moving and struggling to find homes for their kittens. The poor little mite was going to go to a shelter at only 7 weeks old. Coz she is so small she spends a lot of time curled up on the closest, warmest lap. Which used to be Hamlets throne.

Will get some Feliway as suggested and just keep trying to socialise the 2 of them.

Thanks for the input all :)
