Hi All.

I have a MSI AMD R6770, which has been causing random crashes of my computer (sometimes going weeks without a crash) can't be windows or drivers because it happens in BIOS as well, windows says the cause of the crashes is video hardware. Lately it gets to a stage where the screens won't even switch on, the PC starts in a crashed state. onboard seems to work fine.

I had MSI afterburner keep a log, thinking it might be overheating but from what I see it has not gone higher then 43 degrees.

If I am going to blow the money on a new Gcard (considering I got my current one for a grand) I am thinking of going with this EVGA GF GT740 ? It seems the best for the price range, not keen to spend more then R1600

Seems like it but the best way to know is to test another card and see if it still crashes.

I could very well be... Maybe just borrow a GFX and confirm your PCIe slot, or try to reproduce the problem on another system;

Browse GFX-cards at carbonite.co.za, you might be able to pick up a deal there.

Good Luck!

Oh I didn't think of that,

How reliable are second hand cards these days? I used to buy them when I was a laatjie, had a problem every now and then.

thank you!

I'm guessing you've already tried this, but just in case: try reseating the card. Literally just take it out, blow dust off the contacts, and put it back in. Also check that the power connectors going to it are inserted firmly. I recently had a very similar issue, and it turned out one of PEG connectors came ever so slightly loose over the last couple of years.

EDIT: also try powering off and removing the CMOS battery for a while before rebooting. Sometimes motherboards (especially ASUS) ones get "confused" and prefer on-board graphics over the dedicated GPU.

I tried your first suggestion originally (a few times), finally got to the edit, no change :(

I had the exact same problem. Pulled out the GPU and the PC ran okay for a few days and then the board went dead. No beeps, no display. Be aware to order your parts before incoming shipments are halted for the festive season.

Maybe the push I need for an upgrade, but New Mobo, CPU and RAM? I'll be crying

Too late, and I missed a great deal because of my indecisiveness.

What's your current system specs?

Ouch! That upgrade is long overdue. You might want to check the second hand market for an i3 Haswell system as those are more pocket friendly than Skylake.

Second hand cards are fairly reliable but I doubt you're looking for a card with a warranty.

I don't game that much any more, so it has not really been needed, but now Fallout 4, Battlfefront and GTA V....
I'll check them out.
What chassis & psu do you have? Should be able to do i5+mb+8gb for <R4k
400W Huntly PSU and a genric midrange tower.
