Hey guys, I am sure you have been asked this a thousand times. But I literally don't even know were to start looking to try and understand this stuff.

Here is a copy of my line stats.

What I want to know is if someone can direct me somewhere and inform me if it is good or bad?

Earlier tonight I started to have massive and frequent ping spikes while playing Call of Duty online, when pining a website it had intermittment (2 - 5minutes) spikes for 10 - 20 seconds then go back to normal for a bit.

Thanks for any links or help provided.

Only things you have to look out for are Attenuation, SNR Margin and Rate. On each test the first number is the down and the second is the up. Hence the A (for asymmetrical ) in ADSL :P

Ok, nerd jokes aside, your SNR is decent, BUT your attenuation (general term for signal interference, including EMI and crossover, and others...) is a massive 16.0dB down and 8.5dB up. In english this means that you'll be playing happily and WHAM lag spike for no reason.

Your rate is 4096 kb/s, so your synced to Telkom at max speed for the phone cable. So you do have a 4meg line (or at least a line capable of 4meg). Phone Telkom and tune them either someone stole their cables, or there is a gaping hole in one of their copper backbone cables.

Best of luck :D

Sorry but I have to disagree u wont get lag in fact u have a very good line when it comes to attenuation the lower the better and anything under 20db is brilliant.like he said attenuation is (general term for signal interference, including EMI and crossover, and others...) so the less "signal interference" the better. Now I know u would want to argue but I did my homework

as for SNR the higher the better and yours is pretty high of the highest I have seen in my year of experience of adsl
as for the comment to call Telkom DON'T.... No seriously DON'T your line is perfect and telling them that there is something is wrong and there isn't is just plain dum

heres is my table of comparrisons
SNR:
6dB or below is very bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with little or no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Attenuation:

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

I am having sync problems on my 128/384 line, strangely enough it is worse in the mornings and evenings - EVERYDAY

How can I tell what my SNR levels are if the modem doesn't specifically display it? Also, I have two different attenuations - I take the D & U to be for Upstream and Downstream.

DS Line Attenuation: 32
US Line Attenuation: 18

Mineer, These are the stats from my 4mbits line. They are so radically different I don't see how I can use your table for either Upstream or Downstream. please assist

SNR Margin Downstream 21.5 dB Upstream 12 dB
Line Attenuation Downstream 30.5 dB Upstream 15.5 dB
Thanks

what is your SNR? but with your Attenuation at 32/18 I suspect SNR would also be a good value. check filters remember all telephonic devices must go thru a filter except the modem e.g. alarm systems, fax machine ANYTHING that plugs into ur telephone plug on your adsl line

basically ur downstream is pretty good while upstream is not so good could be an indication of filters not installed correctly or too many telephonic devices on the line to check if it is the filter to many telephones is problem unplug ALL telephonic devices except the modem reboot the modem then check SNR and Attenuation specifically checking the upstream also it is recommended to plug ur modem in the main jack not an extension jack

Mineer tried that, all telephonic devices unplugged, modem into main jack. Figures remain unchanged. Any other advice although lines works well with no disconnects etc. I don't play online games so don't know about lag etc. Openweb speed test indicates i can down load at 3250. Thanks

well u dont need a really "strong" upload line cos download is where its at. Your upload SNR and attenuations rate are not bad they just not great so unless u uploading more than u downloading then u should be ok BTW what is ur upload speed on that test u did

First and foremost thanks a tonne for the informative response.

Last night I actually did experience a high number of lag spikes from about 8 - 9 in the evening and then it become perfect after that.

Would that be caused by people in my area? Or just my unlucky line?

Well that hard to say cos 8-9 is peak hour. but funny u should say last night cos I also notice a lot of games lagging last night on DOTA never even played a decent game without somebody complaining of lag even I had some lag its on a 384 kb but my Stats

ATUC SNR (dB) : 31 / 31
ATUC Attenuation (dB) : 5.5 / 11

and I hardly have problems hosting or playing don't think that I never have lag its just very rare and last night was one of those nights

I have not had issues up until last night.

I have not tested it yet but will wait and see what happens this weekend to see if I still have issues or not.
