IS news server, maybe time for a change ?

I was just watching the news downloads on my machine and watching how each individual thread/connection downloads, I am taking a wild guess and assuming that each thread/connection is throttled to about 2Kb - 3Kb, with a max total download of about 25Kb ...

If this is correct, then 7-8 connections is optimal and anything more is wasted right now.
Let me know what you guys are getting.

There are local only SAIX options available but they're generally more expensive, I think Datapro is one of the guys offering it.

What bothers me is there's been such an absense of IS resellers on this forum recently since things started deteriorating. Isn't there any ISP here willing to help us by taking this up with IS? Openweb, WebAfrica, Cheetah? Anybody?

My speeds are currently around 8-12kB/s and now and then I'll be lucky if it hits 15

Thanks, I missed that one. Though R30/local only GB (their initial 9 June price) means that they are v. pricey compared with IS's local only offering (of course cheap and non-working is not a very compelling combo).
 
im actually starting to think a non-free news server would be good, that way there will be more free server bandwidth for me :D
 
Well we're currently paying for local bandwidth and reliability is pathetic. How do we know for sure that we won't have any of this crap on a paid news server as well? IS doesn't exactly have the best reputation when it comes to uptime.

News server wise whats really interesting me in why IS has two. I mean you could just upgrade your existing setup instead of creating a whole new one, and I hear that news.isdsl.net doesnt seem to have the content that news.is.co.za has (yes I know usenet is usenet but maybe tis using the cache from news.is.co.za ?)

Who knows a pay and a free server mite be planned, or its just a load thing :/
 
lol BTech, gone are the days of emule for me. I dont particularly enjoy being in a queue for 1day before the file starts downloading...

IMO not a good idea - IS would see that people are willing to pay extra for the newsgroups and simply sabotage the 'free' one futher - thus driving more poeple to the revenue generator.

I see a resurgence of the local BT trackers and such.
 
Usenet is far superior to BT when it comes to our situation, after all as soon as u hit your international cap you would be limited to getting what others provide.

A quality news service (which it would have to be if paid for) is always a pay matter, take a look at usenet news server access pricings, they not that expensive due to being overseas but they are still charged for.

Current news is not at the quality to be charged for.

I did specify local BT.

If IS considers charging a fee for usenet thats fine but then they'll have to scrap their inclusive one. As far as I'm concerned a localised version of easynews (of which I am a subscriber) would be great but if they want to avoid a **** storm they need to make it an independent offering.
 
What is the problem with the IS news server?
Is it hte server itself? (Hardware) or just no bandwith to the server?

I'm getting 3-12Kbs on 3 connections. (max i got is 29kbs)
It was running at 39-41Kbs last month. (384 line)
 
Increment your number of connections by 1 each time until you get something decent. I'm currently on 6 connections and getting 30-35kB/s.
