getting a 'unable to find address of server news.is.co.za' when trying to connect. Is it off or what?

Been struggling with the IS News Server for days. Did report the fault to their helpdesk a couple of days ago, but have not heard back from them yet.

I find the IS News Server to be very slow and unreliable. I get disconnected while I am using it. I only started using it a couple of weeks ago and have had the problem since then.

Yep seems their still having issues with the News Server.

Let me put on my b!tch-suit :)

I gave up eons ago with the is news server. It is a disgraceful product - would be far better for IS in general if they simply drop the whole thing.
I just connect to news.mweb.co.za from my other ISP accounts.

the news.mweb.co.za server is just a redirect to the news.saix.net server.

Pinging news.is.co.za [168.209.98.66] with 32 bytes of data:

That was my original major complaint with IS, back in the days when they sold SAIX accounts (the old 165 ip instead of the new 196 ip address).

At that stage, I could not connect to their news server, even though I was paying them for the service.

I am very happy with IS News

I don't know which IS news server you guys use. I have been doing 25GB per month for the last 3 months. I use 5 concurrent open slots in Newsbinpro and get transfers on average 40 - 50KB on my 390Kb line. Transfer is slightly slower in the day, but it flies overnight. Retention is excellent (some files over 60 days) and I have not had an incomplete download in, well, 75 GB worth of downloads. :D I do get the occasional disconnects, but Newsbinpro just reconnects automatically and off we go.

I used Easynews (a pay server) before and I rate IS even higher than that.

I am on the 30G package from Nukecap and located in Cape Town Northern Suberbs.

Pity we can't all have access to IS news server. For those like me who cant access it and dont mind paying for it easynews is worth the money IMO.

Besides - they gave me an extra 20gb for Xmas so I've got no qualms plugging them :)

EDIT - seems they're currently increasing their retention which is cool. Currently its at 30 days.
