Do they not cached items anymore?

nothing ive downloaded in the last week which is cached has been fast speed it starts at 440 and drops to 4kbs

i would rather buy saix local if IS does not cache anymore

its not on uncached items

i dont have a problem with uncached stuff going slowly because the next oke who downloads it will enjoy the full speed and visa versa

but if cached stuff is also going to crawl then there is no point high dude

we all help cache stuff so everyone can enjoy the speed but if this is not the case then whats the point man

The reason is possibly that the retention period for cached items has dropped. Previously an item may have been cached for a few weeks. Then as more people joined, more items were cached locally. As a result, to make room for all these new items, the retention period had to drop. It dropped to around a week, next step would probably be a few days and eventually we'd be lucky if it's cached for more than a day.

The problem: oversubscription.

ya but what do they expect

your telling me IS should stop signing up ppl for the news server so we can enjoy speeds?

surely they can do something about it man

aggg well 8kbs a second from now on wont be so bad :( newshost would become pointless now

i download a movie finished 3 days ago and its crawling

well maybe loads of ppl will leave for saix now and things will get better

They don't sell ADSL accounts based purely on the news servers. They sell you a data allowance, what you do with that is up to you. Most people buy these accounts for the news server, that's their choice. If it breaks they couldn't care if they lose a few leechers, that's why it's up to us to make sure that it doesn't. If you want good speeds, then do yourself a favour and keep things to yourself ;) We all want to be generous and help others out, but bandwidth restrictions prohibit this. It's ok to look out for yourself first, and if things improve then help others. At the moment, promoting it isn't going to do anyone any good.

So are we still convinced constantly promoting it was a good idea?

I Agree. There is no point in growing the pull of users any further. The server is already becoming highly unstable.

Although, on the other hand, i think we mustn't think IS don't have interests in keeping the server alive. The server is the primary reason most people buy local bandwidth from them.

If i was forced to use their bandwidth for torrents, i wouldn't bother with them. The extra bandwidth wastage by having to upload as well as download doesnt make their bandwidth pricing that appealing when i could just to use saix.

Also, and this is the more interesting point, what is IS's competitive advantage going to be when Telkom drop the price of local bandwidth next month. I'm pretty sure they will.

I think it is high time IS, spend some money on the server. Everyone knows about it, it's in no way a secret. To not spend money on the thing , to create the allusion that they don't know what it is used for is pointless. Frankly, if that is the logic we are dealing with, nobody needs to know when they upgrade its infrastructure.

The allusion can then remain intact.

Fortunately everybody doesnt know (or hopefully care) about it. I know of several people who have 3gb IS accounts and, to them, the 27gb of local-only is incidental.

EDIT - the sheer number of new news-server threads that seem to be popping up every other day also hints to me how many still dont know that much about it.

Hey what problem? I did 8-9gb in 8 hours on the server "that does not exist" last night while I was sleeping :D
No problems, jumpy at times but it still moves on a 4meg line.

thats good news man :)

everyone knows about it now guys, its not a secret

its one of IS's biggest selling points

anyway's does not matter will wait and see if it improves

bwana the whole of sgs knows about it, thats alot of ppl right there at the end of the day IS need to do something

the slow speeds but cache was perfect, why change it now

We had 2 servers, unlimited connections, and full speed on both cached and uncached content. We then went down to 1 server, 5 connections, and cached at 20k. It then slowed to 15k, then 10k, then 7k, and now 5k. The news server has NEVER got faster and yet you stupid n00bs continue to insist that the more you talk about it the better it'll get

It'll slow until it's gone.

To them it's not worth the time, effort nor money. Bear in mind that a large portion of their ADSL sales goes towards paying Telkom for the IPConnect link. Their profit margins are therefore as low as basically almost any other ISP, which doesn't leave them with much left over to spend on upgrades. Put yourself in their shoes - if you were offering people a free service, would you care to spend money out of your own pocket to upgrade it so that they can invite thousands of people more to leech, and add unnecessary congestion which would degrade the network more than than it already is? Considering that they're barely making any money out of you, I know that if I were in the position I wouldn't.

Contrary to what people think, cheap local bandwidth has other useful purposes which is what IS is probably concentrating on in terms of QoS. Inter-branch connection, VoIP, FTP etc. are far more lucrative selling points. They couldn't care if the 2000 or whatever news server leechers ditched them because that's not the basis of their business. They're a Tier-1 provider, not an ISP.

i suppose you got a point man

o well slow speeds it will be then :(

will never speak of this server again

The more everyone "doesnt" talk about it, the more interest is sparked by the n00bs.
Im thinking threads like this should be best left for newshost.

Maybe if that 2000 turns into 20000 they would care.

In the short term, i agree, silence is the best way to protect the server.

R20000*R1.50 (say) profit is still pocket change for a company turning over millions per annum.

Anyway, now that people are finally getting on board, can we please vote to delete these news server threads?

I can't connect to the IS news server, is it functioning for you?
