IS news servers - how many?

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm presuming that two news servers entered into Grabit or suchlike would double your connections, and hence your download speeds...

Even if there is only one IS news server, is it not possible to achieve the same result more ethically by running two IS accounts on multiple pppoe connections?

The problem I cannot quite get my head around is how you could fool Grabit into believing that there are two servers so that the traffic is routed through the separate accounts.

You would need two separate routes (eg via interfaces ppp0 and ppp1) but how would the router know which one to use unless Grabit sees two servers on separate IP addresses?

I'm hoping some networking guru will come up an answer/solution....

1) at double the cost, 2) dunno if it's possible... how do you configure the routing?

You would need to fool windows, which afaik is impossible (at least in that sense ;) )

If they did I'm pretty sure they would keep it to themselves as they realise that the more the lines get saturated the less number of connections IS allows.

It used to be that you could run plenty more connections on each server simultaneously but over-use caused them to limit the total number off connections.

If you've ever wondered why so many people dont know much about news servers in general (as compared to torrents, limewire, kazaa, etc) it's because people dont really discuss it as publicly. That's why I always recommend people who want to learn more visit that other site ;).

That is now the sixth name I know of.

I have managed, in the past, to find 3 IP's (servers?) that those names resolve to. Only 2 ever worked at the same time & then only 4 connections each. That was about 8 to 12 months back. Since then, only the one works. I check periodically but no go. So it's only the one with 5 connections (and sometimes - very seldom - 6).

It appears there were two news servers back then.,,,

...Not sure I follow his configuration fully, but it seems to suggest that what I'm wanting may be possible. At the very least, you should be able to run a news client on two separate machines on a network and route the traffic through different pppoe connections.

Just not sure that you could do it from a single news client without having two distinct server IPs. But maybe some kind of local proxy/tunnel for one of the servers might work...

Yeah, but two IS accounts means they get twice the income, and a user has to pay twice the cost.

And IS will love you for that but there is only a finite amount of resources they are willing to allocate to the news servers and clearly we've hit that ceiling a long time ago.

All you're proving to them is that more and more people will sign up even if they dont improve the service offered. ;)

Anyhow my point is - you might not get the help you're looking for here.
