IS news servers - how many?

How many news servers are there? Still only one? (both news.isdsl.net and news.is.co.za point to the same place).

I have a question:
I bought a IS account so I could use the news servers but when I write news.is.co.za in my browser it always just says server is taking too long to respond???
This is extremely annoying.
I can use the newshost website but always get download speeds of 10kps and for a 4mbps line thats pathetic..
any ideas?
 
afaik - and this from a source who information would NOT convince me to bet on the horses :-) - one of the IS servers is in Rosebank and the other in Bryanston.

Register at newshost.za.net and read the NZB Guide.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm afraid it wont make a blind bit of difference what speed your line is.
If something your downloading through the news server is being grabbed from international locations then it will run at the slow speeds you have been encountering.
However, if content is cached locally on the news server you'll get fast download speeds.
For it to be cached locally it must have already been downloaded by others and therefore is residing on a local news server. However, you need to hurry because that cached content will soon be overwritten with something else.

To keep track of what is cached use newshost.za.net

The slow download speed is a small price to pay in order to download 10-30gb each month through local only IS gigs. Otherwise you'd have to pay a sweet fortune for international gigs.

I think that only in SA do we define local and international gigs, which is why you have to go through this painful process (described above) in the first place

If there is, it's more likely to come to your PM than it is to be posted here ;) Hehe, I don't personally know of one that points to a different IP...
 
As far as I know there is only one server, if there is anouther I think its a pretty well kept secrete. If anyone else knows of anouther please PM me.

Browse the cached section. Uncached content will take forever.

OK, let me rephrase, are there two IP's as there were in the past...
news.is.co.za used to be a different IP to news.isdsl.net and it's no longer the case. Is there still a second IP - and no, I don't believe it is cloak and dagger knowlege, it needs to be shared if there are two - since no IS folk are represented on this forum, I thought I'd ask the ISP folk.

So if you have knowledge of a second server with only a few people knowing of and cruising at FULL SPEEDS, are you going to share it with all so it will fall down to 5kb/s.

Don't think so. :rolleyes: :)

If anyone has knowledge of a second server they should entrust that information to me for its safe keeping. :D
