Im just wondering why exactly they dont keep the news servers unshaped?

Why not allow full speed downloads (on cached content as per what has always been) from the server because now the same downloads are being done through Astraweb etc or torrents or OpenWebs Downstorm (or similar) services.

They are forcing people to use international bandwidth. I say remove the limits for the IS News Server and it will reduce the load on the international segment of the network. No?

This obviously applying to the majority of the uncapped accounts that are some sort of IS product.

Made a similar suggestion in the MWeb thread. Got a good reply. The heart of it, I guess, is that local bandwidth is no longer cheaper than international. And who do we have to thank? Why, Telkom, of course.

Shaping uses Deep Packet Inspection. That works out what protocol it is & shapes it accordingly. DPI doesn't inherent distinguish between destinations, only packet type. So it gets identified as NNTP & gets shaped regardless of destination.

If astra etc is giving you better speeds than the local NS then its probably not a shaping issue but rather throttling on the server itself. i.e. Its either clogged or they made a conscious decision to limit access to the NS for whatever reason. I suspect that they limited it because it makes it very easy to do lots of gigs....which cost them. While with Astra etc you need to pay which represents an additional barrier that will scare off lots of people.

@Gate: Local is still cheaper than intl, just not by much. So MrG's argument still stands.
