In this day and age I wonder why widows still needs to reboot; I mean really. Hasnt microsoft or Linux figured out by now, that people dont want to reboot their machines anymore - get a life.

We're eagerly waiting the day that Mofosoft will someday wakeu-up and write their code in such a way that rebooting is not neccesary. Its very interesting for me to realise that after all the money they've spent on market research and getting to know what people want - Bill Gates has still not realised that we are sick-and-tired of having to reboot our machines.

Have they ever considered how much time is being wasted in the global view of plant earth; think about it, you go and do the math - so many people sitting front of their PC's waiting for the bloodey computer to finish the reboot cycle; or is it the everlasting-nonstopping rinse cycle.

I think that its time for the revolution to start; we shoul realise that the poor are actually controlling the world and the rich are trying to confince us differently withou really having to lift a finger or spending a coin.

I think that if we decie to start the non-reboot revolution; we'll really see that WEB2 is actually here; a place where we no longer differentiate between my computer and your computer; my information and your information.

I think its time for us to really unite about this and put our petty differences aside. The problem is that eveyone has their own number, their own name and they always put different things out to the world. I wonder when they're going to realise that we're competeing against eachother for no particular goal. What's the goal? Have you thought about that.

Earth is round and everything else around us is just spinning in circles and circles - has anyone ever noticed this? So their's that spin-cycle again, the one that just keeps repeating again and again.

First power number one takes over; then five hundred years later power number two takes over; and so the weaker remains under and the people in power really takes the position of power. We must decide; either we really understand what it takes for us to unite and do that; or we'll just have to give up and realise that we are never ever going to getanywhere. The people will remain like washing machines and tumbe dryers, circling round and round.

WHO CARES ABOUT THE CIRCLE OF LIFE; has anyone ever realised that they just wanted to do something a bit different than before.

The Procducers this guy said : "Stop the earth because I wanna get on!" we need to realise and understand that their are no more mistakes; the world has already made too many mistakes; for some uneager reason they keep on posponing the unison of all people to become one.

Why...?

People, catch a wake-up will ya; this is the time to realise that all people on earth are really ready to unite, because everyone is just going in their own directions trying to prove their better than other people - for what.

Think about it; the word everyone ends in one. Comment and speak up; no longer keep your differences as amunition.

The reason why windows need to reboot, is that it prevents you from overwriting dll's that are in use. So in order to replace the dll, you have to stop the app that uses it, this will release the lock on the dll, and the file is overwritten.

On Linux you only need filesystem permissions on this library to overwrite it, doesn't matter is an app is using it or not.

Is this crap font really necessary?"

Find it a real bugger to read on LCD

Me and my friend where just discussing this yesterday, Windows only wants to restart when you change the full computer name or the workgroup or the domain.

Office doesnt ask you to reboot when installed. Other programs from 3rd party vendors require restarts but its not MS's fault...

iBurst installation wants two :D It gets niether but still works fine.

Who said that linux needs reboots?

I have linux machines here with uptimes in excess of 430 days...

If you think Windows desktop editions reset too much, you should try Windows Mobile

Windows rarely forces one to reboot and, even when it tells you to, it's not always strictly necessary. Running Windows without rebooting is like re-using a condom 6 or 7 times: it's theoretically possible, but not advisable. ;)

haha well said Edwe! Zabzoo what you say have some truth in it but you must remember, people are born competitive. I mean lets look at a simple but oh so true example. You start do dance with a good looking girl suddenly another guy starts to dance between you beside you... Immediately you hate him and for being such an ass. That's just life!

The proper way to end explorer (without forcing it) is to go to "start" "turn off..." and then while holding ctrl+alt+shift, click "cancel". Explorer will shut down on its own.

ey Twiggy - sorry to ask; but do you need to add/remove software on your installations thats been running 430 days on a day-to-day basis.

Just curious;

Thanks for all the great responses guys/gals!

Yes, we do add and remove software from above machines. Only when you need to do updates to the kernel does reboots become necessary. For loading new services/etc no reboot is necessary. Some kernel stuff can also be done without rebooting (if the stuff is modularized), but don't count on it.
