Sometimes the Internet in this Country drives me to tears - and I’m not just talking about home products.
I work shifts, and therefore get lots of time to practice my online gaming from the office. But because SAIX and IS can’t get their collective asses in gear and sort out their peering issues my on-line gaming experience is limited to MMORPG’s.
Here’s the situation:
I connect to the IS backbone through a nice fat T1 pipe – plenty of bandwidth for playing FPS’s – or so you’d imagine. I can connect to the GameZone servers (hosted by MWeb and therefore IS) at 10~30ms – excellent for online FPS.
Problem is that the GameZone servers are almost always empty – if you want a game you have to connect to SAIX.
But the moment I connect to SAIX my latency climbs to 300~400 ms.
400ms!!?! On a regional link? I can get better latency though to the UK?!
The problem (it appears) is that these two giants (IS and SAIX) have gotten themselves into a pissing contest over the peering links between them. Ask either party and you get a woeful tale of incrimination against the other.
Oh bloody boo-hoo.
This is yet another example of how the so-called ‘giants’ in this country don’t give a hoot about their customers, the product they provide or the public relations they generate.
And before you go thinking it just affects my gaming experience – consider this.
EVERYTHING over that peering link is slower. Web browsing, VPN’s, Streaming, etc etc etc… Gaming (like the canary of old) often provides the warning sign of more serious problems to come.
