Is Sentech Using Transparent Caching ?

The latency takes place between the Modem and the Tower and I'm working on it [;)]

Transparent caching doesn't affect latency for pings. The transparent caches in use typically only cache a select set of protocols such as HTTP, and streaming media.

And yes, IS does make use of transparent caching proxies. They were one of the first ISP's to do so. Everyone does it these days.

Sentech does implement a transparent proxy, but as others pointed out this isn't the cause of higher latency, that would only affect certain ports, and wouldn't necessarily introduce latency anyway. If you tracert you'll see that there is already fairly high latency on the first hop, which I guess means between modem & tower as ProAsm says, glad to hear you're working on it ProAsm, hope you find something interesting :)

Ah, thanks. Yes, that itself would somewhat better explain the latency (and variability in latency) to the first hop .. was wondering about that.

Pro, you got any time frames on when we can expect some head way on the ping time issue, is it an issue that can be resolved ?

Silver up to now I've had other priorities but they are almost all done now and the ping times is my next one, so in a week or so I'll post exact times between everything and then we can take it from there.

Great stuff, if you need help with anything just gimme a shout.

Just doing a quick check this afternoon I found the following.
From Sentech Server in Jhb to the Durban North Tower was 28 ms
Remember that also comes down here via the IS link and then a Microwave link to the Tower.
From the Durban North Tower to my Modem was 106 ms.
So the problem is either the Tower or the Modem.

*points finger at the modem... again*

How much would sentech lease a microwave link with internet access for?

"Warning: Use with extreme caution."

It would be a rough guess, but the same as MTN, or Vodacom, I think for a E1 node it would cost around R 30-40 k per month, however this is just working on Telkom advertised rates as well as information passed around during conversations.
