Is standby considered overtime?

A company that doesn't do it shows bad form already and smaller BullShyte IT companies love to not pay for things like this.

I would tell any company that wanted me to do standby but not pay for it to go and fly a kite.

I don't get paid for standby unless I work. I'm on standby for portions of the Christmas period. Not great, but better than no leave at all.

A R1000 for a week at my employer, plus whatever hours you will work if you are called out. It's really unfair not to pay since your life is on hold for the entire duration you are on standby, too much exploitation, yet people moan all the time about labour laws, I am actually surprised that it is not part of the laws to pay for standby allowance, always assumed it is.

Not to get into too much detail but looking to see if anyone can point me in the right direction for the thread title + holywalloftext

Contract is generic for the most part (you'll work overtime where required). The issue is the business feels that time for time is fair and if all you doing is carrying a phone to answer what's the problem with that.

It seems like they think if you over threshold you automatically become a slave that just has to bend over backwards on a whim without compensation except for when you actually work and that's just time back...and just be grateful you have a job.

The current situation is standby Friday-Monday with 4 hours on-site on a Saturday (on rotation, so split between 4 people so each person has to work atleast one weekend a month) to get one full working day off (everyone agreed and is happy with that) however they want us to have standby the entire week, essentially 24-7

What I'm asking is what does the law say they can do and what can we do in this situation.
I think the general consensus is that if we were being fairly compensated it wouldn't be a problem but what is fair compensation

Thanks

When I was on standby, I got standby allowance at a fraction of my rate while on standby. If called out (do actual work) I would then get paid for the call out.
I think it was something like 20% of my monthly salary for 2 weeks worth of standby. Weekends included. It was a long time ago, so can't exactly remember.

Your deal sounds similar and is honestly not such a bad deal.
It just means you have to be relatively close to the office, and not drink (too much).

My work is a little different. We rotate being on call, so you're on 24/7 for an entire week and get paid a small amount each day and double on weekends - whether you get a call or not.

It's only when you take a call and have to fix an issue that you file overtime-worked hours.

I’ve always been paid a standby allowance while on standby and then additional call out for every hour actually worked on call.
