I installed Call of Juarez this evening and after installation it said that the software needs to install some dll’s to run…I agreed and then had to restart. I check on the net and there were lots of complaints about PC’s crashing, DVD writes burn speeds slowing down all because of StarForce Copy protection. It also installs some devices on XP (hidden in Device manager).

I just spend quite a bit of money on a new PC and I’m not too fond of the idea of installing something (which I even paid for) that can cause some dodgy things on my PC.

Has anyone ever experienced any problems with StarForce or are the hackers in the world just trying to get people to stop buying games that require copy protection to make their lives easier?

Any comments?

Some has problems with Starforce, some don't. Myself in the latter category. I've currently 6 Starforce protected games installed, with only one game (GTI Racing) giving problems, which I suspect is game related. No system problems anywhere. That's me.

Starforce is malware.

Seriously, it's not guaranteed to stuff up your system but it's pretty damn likely. And it's very difficult to uninstall.

When will Game distributors stop messing their paying customers around with these crap systems. The only people who suffer are those that buy the game because the pirates are using hacks / nocds anyway. It unforgivable that pirates can have a better game experience than paying customers in the name of copy protection.

Relic seems to be leading the way. DoW had copy protection removed in a patch, and CoH never had any at all. The way to go is to have a solid online experience and CD-Key management.
