Is starting WOW a good idea?

Hi all

Ive been thinking about starting to play this addictive thing again. I used to play on one of those emu servers but left because its laggy and server goes down all the time.

Just a few things i wana know before i get addicted again. How long do you think it will take me to get to level 80? and do you think the ping would be lower on a official server?

your ping could be anything from 200 up to 2k, depending on how and from where you are connected to the official server.

getting to lvl 80, well that has been made easy so that every fool can quick lvl; if they really want too :D
 
well kinda depends if you go the pvp or normal server rout aswell cos gettin ganked and corps camped also slows down leveling speed

Thats why you need a lvl 80 main on the server first :p Park him at a tree close by
 
strange question to ask on a public forum -> "Is starting WoW a good idea?"

If you like the game, play it. if you dont, leave it. If you are concerned about possibly being "addicted", consult your family and/or friends.
 
Ive just started rolling my first toon. Getting through the levels.. and its fun.. but not that fun. The whole "kill 10 of these.. kill 5 of these" thing gets really really boring quickly.. but its fun just explore the world and play some battlegrounds. Though you can only really play battle grounds when you have the right equipment and on 9 (29/39/49) to stand a chance.

I play about an hour or two a day.. sometimes more.. but I dont feel the need to play it 24/7 (except to check my auctions!)
 
Try the free trial before subscribing maybe. If you can get to level 20 without feeling too bored at playing it solo (and you WILL be playing it mostly solo from lvl 1-68), then it'll probably be a good idea to subscribe.

FYI latency these days is negligible, I average around 350ms which is totally playable for pve, might be a little laggy for arenas but fine for BG's, raiding, etc.
 
The key to this game is that its NOT a single player game.

When I first starting playing, I started with a few friends. When I rerolled, i did so a new realm. Therefore there where always players around the same level band as I was. This makes a big difference.

Starting new on realm that is almost as old as WoW EU itself, can be a mistake. Just about all the players you meet are way ahead of you. Probably all the players you encounter leveling, are alts. These people have probably run all the lower lvl instances many times and arnt really interested in going there again. They are happy to power level using the bind-account items bought by their main which gives bonus xp, and gold from their main .

Seriously, If you want to start a new character, start with some friends, or join a new realm. This game is not about "kill 10 of these...kill 5 of these". Its about having fun with your friends and/or family online. Half the fun is exploring dungeons with your friends and exploring the lore behind the content. If this means joining a non-South African guild, then broaden your horizons and dont be so insular. If it doesnt work out, move on. When you get your character to lvl 80, you can always cross realms to join any guild that will accept you, South African or not.

If this is not your thing, move on to another game.

Zippy, well put up there.

Only point of contention is that at this point in the game how many peeps feel like leveling their toons from 1 .. all the way through to 80? So I reckon if you see a lvl 14 running around killing deers .. lol... its possibly someone like you and me who has just started playing.

And to Handz, wow is pretty boring in pve if you're not hooking up with friends (europeans call them mates -haai sies) and other guildies online. Its the chitchat and having folks to help you out that makes the game more social.

I'm a wow addict but I still have a real life, family, work, etc. .. well for the other 12 hours of the day anyway. :)))
 
rather playing something proper... like... MAPLE STORY !!!! :D

/agrees, online single player will have you bonkers quickly
