Is storing files on a server a good idea?

Is storing files on a server a good idea? and are they safe from prying eyes?
and if so which are the best hosts, I thought I almost lost my drive that I save files on Phew! thank goodness I was able to fix it so just as a precaution any advice on storing files etc on servers would be a help
