From Nokia's official statement

Reading the responses in Slashdot as well as other IRC channels.

I have to wonder what the future holds, esp if there is comments like "Closing Symbian source is like cutting off the head of something after you shot it with a 12 gauge to make sure it doesn't get up again"

Then again its not something unexpected looking at Microsoft's track record. All companies they dealt with closed their Open Source departments... Guess QT is next :(

Negative.
Symbian is crucial to Nokia's survivability in the next 5-10 years.
It will be used in their lower cost handsets for the 3rd world / emerging markets.

Symbian^3 has a shelf life of about 5 years left. That's it. (It's a transition phase, killing it off completely, immediately - is lunacy)
After that it's Microsoft all the way for their smartphones.

I sure as hell hope they budgeted the salaries of both app and OS developers for that 5 years, because the developers are jumping ship by the the truck load.
Nokia even tried to "Buy" app developers with there $10 million dollar contest, And from what I have seen inside the developer forums there wasn't as big an uptake on it as they wanted.

This closing the OS source is just adding another nail in an OS where Nokia themself refuse to commit on how long they will support Symbian, all you get out of them is "no its ok you are save for 2011 and 2012"

That's the problem they face.
Consumers in the emerging markets don't really have/use money to purchase software for a phone (As Apple and Google have shown with their stores (iTunes, Android market etc.)

Between a rock and a hard place.
 
I'm a die hard symbian fan, and I too think that Symbian is on it's way out. Development is being focused on less and less. Nokia as you all know is also going for Windows Phone 7 in future devices. Meego is dead. Symbian is next.
 
Meego is much more alive than Symbian in terms of future development.
 
it's a pity really. I enjoyed my Nokia phoned over the last few years and even when I tried other brands (Samsung / Sony / HTC / Palm / BB) they simply couldn't keep up with Nokia's hardware.
