I've had numerous run-ins with Telkom in the past, and through the events I've met plenty of people that have the same problems. (And in some cases even worse)
One of which was that Telkom billed me more than R1,000 a few months after I closed all my accounts and paid all outstanding fees. Then they proceeded to escalate it to the point where they wanted to take me to court even though what they were doing is illegal.
Even the clerk at the shop could see that it was clearly a mistake on their side, Telkom has this very effective policy that if Headquarters never answer the phone, they can't be wrong. And if you dare to disagree, you'll hear from their army of lawyers.
Beyond the extreme cases like these, there are more ground level issues that seem to be Telkom specific.
For example, I received an aggressive message from them where I was threatened because they failed to bill me, and therefore never received payment. No reminder, or any form of notification was sent, it was straight to aggressive threats.
My question therefore is this: If this was any other company, I'd simply close my accounts and take my business elsewhere. Why are they allowed to treat their customers like dogs?
They still bill ADSL users R155.00 every month for a telephone service that's never used (by none of the people I could find), nor ever requested or wanted.
Shouldn't / Aren't there consumer laws that prevent abuse like this? Or are they simply untouchable and therefore above the law?
