I upgraded my adsl line from 384k to 1M on the 3rd of June. Now the adsl works perfectly for a couple of hours, and then it loses sync, then connects again, then drops it again, this continues for an hour or 3 then it's back up again. I've phoned Telkom about 20-25 times now, and about 4 technicians "were on it", they test the line on the timeslots when it's working, then they say nothing is wrong. Needless to say, its still broken... They've tried everything and nothing seemed to have worked, How do I force them to install a new line?

Log in on your ADSL modem's web page and go to it's ADSL statistics page, and then post your ADSL statistics here.

You should at least post the Line Attenuation, SNR margins & Sync rates/current speeds - both for the up & down streams.

Also tell us what ADSL modem you're using.

Down Up
SNR Margin 24.0 dB 1.1 dB
Line Attenuation 50.0 dB 25.5 dB
Upstream 512000
Downstream 1024000
And as for the modem, its a Billion 800VGT(From previous Telkom contract)

Your upstream SNR margin is way too low, which is why you're experiencing so many disconnects!

You'll either have to get a better ADSL modem, or you'll just have to ask Telkom to lower your upstream speed to like 256kbps.
I'm not sure if Telkom can adjust your upstream speed without lowering your downstream speed as well, so they'll most likely put you on 512kbps down & 256kbps up.

"Better" ADSL modems that I'll recommend are TP-Link & D-Link ones.
If you're satisfied with your Billion's wireless capabilities, then you can just chain it with a D-Link DSL-2500U ADSL modem (which doesn't have WiFi & it has only 1x LAN port) which costs less than R200.

Yes, the D-Link DSL-2640U is fine.
I can't promise you that getting a D-Link/TP-Link ADSL modem would solve your SNR margin issues completely, but they should at least provide a good improvement over your existing SNR margins.

Just make sure that you don't pay too much for it.
You can check for prices at like ShopMania.co.za / ShopBot.co.za / PriceCheck.co.za / Jump.co.za

I would actually recommend that you try and borrow someone's D-Link/TP-Link ADSL modem first, before you go out and spend a couple of hundred Rands on an ADSL modem that might not even solve all your problems.

No, Telkom is NOT completely useless.
I sent [email protected] an e-mail flagged IMPORTANT, with Delivery Report and Read Receipt, on the 6th of June.
In it, I complained about their perceived policy of sending snotty SMSs and automatically generated threats to discontinue services, whilst failing to send me so much as one single account to date. I also instructed them to cancel my Telkom Simple(-minded).
Yesterday, I received a message: "Deleted without opening."
When I called their "help" number today, they told me that no instruction had been given to use Telkom Simple as an enema.
Conclusion: Telkom is VERY good against Low Blood Pressure.
Unfortunately, try as I might, I have not been able to descry any other good attributes at that institution.

my line use to drop all the time, sometimes every 5-10 mins, then hourly etc. it started doing this in december 2010 and i had 3 "techies" here who (as we know) were useless. anyway in May i noticed that my line would rarely disconnect and now my line is good again.

Basically, you going to have to wait about 6 months for your interwebz to work as per normal

Thats Telcum for you

1) Yes, Telclowns are as useless as they come.

2) A newerer, betterer router won't fix your line BUT it will greatly help getting the most out of the existing one. Since I said Goodbye to my Mega 300WR and Hello to the TP-Link W8960N I notice much more reliable connectivity, better wireless to our second PC and subjectively more "oomph" in general.

3) Things will get better ... eventually. And then they will break again and they will set you to a lower speed, and you will phone them and have a bunch of techies at your house, and they wil give you a lot of stories, and they will be different every frigging time, and you will not know whom of them to believe but nobody can help you anyway but maybe one or two of the techies want to sell you routers that fell off a truck for cheap, and they will push the fault from guy to guy, and you wiil abandon all hope, and some day, when you hardly think about it anymore, you wil notice your line is somehoy better and does actually behave like a real internet connection, and you wil be happy until it breaks again and you're back to square one.

4) We're all so doomed!

Is that a rhetorical question? Telkom makes your life a misery either way... for a multi-trillion rand company, why do clients have to wait 2-3 weeks for a line installation? Its flipping ridiculous!!

You are too far from your exchange. When you upped the line speed, you started dropping connection. We had same issue. Dropped our speed back down and problem was sorted.

I informed Telkom in April that I was moving on 5 May. I'm still waiting for my ADSL at the new address (that's 2 and a half months and counting with no ETA). Reasons/excuses have varied but the latest seems to be 'no port available'.
