Hey guys,

Does anyone know if the Telkom Do 3/Do3 Closer services are unshaped?

My dad uses a VPN which is unusable on a shaped line--so we have to have unshaped. Do you think the shaping on the VPN would be noticeable if we get Do 3 and it's shaped?

Thanks!
David

It's shaped

I dont know if its only me but with my telkom 1Gb account my latency in games was allways 100+ with SAIX now its 50-60ms on COD4 with telkom shapped account. Strange

Sorry, I don't get what all of this means   Please explain in shaped vs. unshaped terms?

Shapped. Telkom and allmost all ISP sell shapped account. They are much cheaper than unshapped accounts. Look at the price diffirence here http://axxess.co.za/adsl.php

Anyways Shapped accounts are port prioritized. Means if you download something from the internet using your browser you will get max speed during office hours. The main reason for that is cause it uses port 80 that port is what all bussinesses use during office hours. 80 mostly browsing 21 sending email 110 receiving mail. These ports get top priority during office hours due to all bussinesses using them to run their bussiness. So basiclly when you have a shapped account and you use it for games and downloading using no standerd ports (ports like 12541,14256,98548,35474) usually p2p ports your speed will be reduced and you wont get max speed you will see you latency/ping in games much higher.

Unshapped they dont prioritize any ports. Meaning all the ports get max speed and they dont slow anything during bussiness hours. But you will see they cost a bit more than shapped accounts.

Thanks cavedog that helps to clarify things :)

We have a 4gb unshaped account at the moment... but are looking to get a better (faster) service as my dad is even struggling with the speed over his VPN at the moment. His allowed monthly quota for an internet connection is R1000. Would you recommend going for Do 3? Or do you think the port shaping over his VPN would be worse than what we have now?
