Deputy President Kgalema Motlante was telling the truth about how the ANC lost a by-election in Tembisa recently -and by the way I have no reason to think he was lying, then the ANC lost the plot completely.

Deputy President Motlanthe is reported to have said the ANC deserved to lose a recent by-election after fielding "a drunkard" as its candidate in a Tembisa ward by-election.

Talking to a Sunday newspaper, Motlante warned against mismanaged deployment, saying the ruling party could ill-afford to field candidates who were not wanted by the people.

"The ANC lost a by-election to Cope because the candidate of the ANC was known to be a drunkard," he said.

A drunk! But how is this possible? How do you field a drunk to represent a party at an election? Is it possible that people could lose sight of such a basic principle?

You cannot be represented by a drunk, and this, is very, very basic. You see, drunks are social outcasts in any society or community that is self-respecting. So, when this "drunk" as the deputy president laments, was imposed on the people of the ward, they simply boycotted the by-election.

But the key question is why was the ANC branch not able to grasp such a basic problem, and especially after such a wave of violent protests against poor service delivery in some of the areas not far from Tembisa?

What message does this send to the country? Does it tell us there is such wide-spread complacency at these leadership levels that party branches are not able to use plain common sense to deal with basic issues, like saying "no" to a drunk?

How does service delivery happen if the ANC branch is prepared to be represented by someone whose brain faculties have been affected by booze? Are we in trouble here? Someone please tell me we are not, because this is scary stuff.

How would this candidate have been able to deliver service to the people had the residents been stupid enough to vote for him?

Thank God, the residents smart enough to know.

As in most townships, there are serious challenges and problems facing the people of Tembisa.

How would a "drunk" been able to tackle challenges affecting people on the ground.

"The ANC got the message loud and clear. This is what the community told them, they disregarded it and the community and the community then did not vote. They simply stayed at home and the ANC lost. If people in leadership of the branch manipulate processes, the community must be able to punish them, that's how they will correct it," said the deputy president to a Sunday newspaper.

Motlanthe's open lambasting of his own party comes in backdrop of a wave of violent service delivery protests in some the ANC's strong-holds where municipalities are dysfunctional.

The 2011 local government elections are around the corner. That's where it matters most. The ANC had better fix this. It's dangerous. We will all pay a painful price.

The deputy president was right to be livid.

CHAMPAGNE, exquisite food , designer clothes, vibrant celebrities and girls in skimpy outfits have attracted hundreds of young people to the ANC Youth League's parties over the past few weeks.

About 500 guests partied on the roof of Rosebank's Park Hyatt Hotel on Friday night ahead of Jacob Zuma's Siyanqoba rally at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg today.

They were treated to chicken noodle and vegetable stir-fry, barbequed kebabs and prawn curry.

Many sipped Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky and puffed Cuban cigars.

The party was part of Gauteng's election youth campaign, dubbed the "ride and braai", during which ANC-branded cars, helicopters and Harley-Davidsons visited places like Mamelodi and Atteridgeville in Pretoria and popular hangouts like Chesa Nyama (braai meat) in Midrand.

Just before midnight, former ANCYL president Fikile Mbalula and Gauteng health MEC Brian Hlongwa thanked the crowd before treating them to expensive Moët champagne.

Haniff Hoosen, the ID spokesperson for safety and security, has reacted with shock to the revelation that Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and 8 police officials spent almost R250 000 staying at the Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town earlier this year.

In a reply to a parliamentary question, the minister wrote that his stay was necessary based on the fact that renovations were being carried out at his ministerial residence.

‘This is just another example of the harsh reality of personal greed behind the charm offensive of the current ANC Government. Wasting this kind of money on a lavish lifestyle has come to characterize the ANC over the past decade or more,’ Mr Hoosen says.

‘It is a matter of days after each election before the ANC’s leaders forget about the poor who elected them to their positions in the first place.

‘It is shocking and absolutely disgraceful that a minister can spend such a huge amount of money on five-star accommodation when millions of South Africans are caught in a daily struggle for survival,’ says Hoosen.

‘What kind of example is Mthethwa setting? The excuse that his official residence is under renovations is particularly feeble because there are many vacant houses in Acacia Parliamentary Village that he could have stayed in temporarily.

The ID Secretary-General also slammed the minister for spending almost R6 000 on drinks in just 17 days, saying ‘this is a fine example to be setting for our people.

fried chicken and johnny walker black label seems to be part of the anc manifesto, so you cannot blame him for showing support for his party by being a drunk ;)
