Just wondering if Monochoice might ever decide to release a single view HD decoder - I really don't need the functionality of a PVR, plus it's way to expensive and over-rated.

I'd like to watch the HD channel(s), but don't want a PVR - are there any other alternative decoders I could buy and receive their HD content?

Never gonna be a non-PVR HD decoder...

MC are living in the Stone Age unfortunately...

EDIT. If you don't need PVR functionality, just don't pay for it, R60 saved.

Well, why would you not want PVR functionality on your HD decoder? Most people do...

To answer the original question, there will be a toned down HD decoder somewhere during 2010. Smaller hard drive etc. I am not talking about the UEC box (with exact same specs as the Pace) launching in January, but another model.

Ummmm, obviously not. The OP doesn't.. ;) But yeah, once you've lived with PVR, it's hard to go back to anything less. I was just implying that MC should have a PVR (without that stupid access ripoff fee) and non-PVR decoder to cater for the high and low end of the market, that's all.

The toned down box will take ages to get released if the UEC model's rollout is anything to go by.

Single view is not PVR.
Single view is viewing one channel.
Dual view is viewing two channels.
PVR is Personal Video Recorder.
SD PVR = Dual View
HD PVR = Single View

MultiRape only has one HD decoder, and it happens to be a single view PVR. They have not said anything about future plans for a non PVR HD decoder.

just clearing up the terms for you :)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The reason for asking is I'm only after the ability to watch an HD channel, and not have to spend R3k (+ installation) on hardware that I'll never use - it amazes me that Monochoice has a R400 decoder and a R3000 decoder, and nothing in between - in all honesty R3k is just to much for a piece of buggy hardware that allows you to watch one HD channel (okay, 3 now) !

Is there maybe a PC TV card solution that'll allow me to receive and stream the HD channels to my LCD?

There honestly isn't that much showing across the DSTV channels that won't be repeated at least twice a week for the next 6 months, so whether I watch it immediately, or two days later, I'm not too worried.

It's not buggy anymore and has not been for some time... and no, there is no other option to receive the 3 HD channels at the moment.

HD decoder = DVB-S2+MPEG-4

Monochoice need to scrap the R400 SD decoder and replace it with R400 HD model.
HD decoders can receive DVB-S2 and decode both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 MP@ML and AVC (H.264) and output AV and HDMI.

If they don't, then they will have to broadcast duplicates of all HD channels - which costs in terms of satellite bandwidth.

The existing 3 HD channels are already mostly duplicates of existing channels.

They just introduced the 1131, because their cost for the 1110 was more than the selling price. Now you are suggesting a HD decoder for the same price as the 1131. That is not going to happen. That is like saying a budget cellphone must have an 8MP camera and touch screen at the same price as the one without.

Over time DVB-S and MPEG2 will be replaced by DVB-S2 and MPEG4 on all transponders.

Sorry for the derail, but I seem to be having an issue with my HDPVR (less than a month old) that freezes on playback of recordings every now and then. You have to stop and resume playback, maybe 3 or 4 times during a show.

You think this is a bug or should I return it?

Have you checked if a firmware upgrade is available?

And when that happens your SD 1131 will make a good door stop.

The cost of technology to do basic HD is minimal - I'm not talking about PVR.
See tele-satellite.com for some pricing.

The cost of more transponders to duplicate the content is substantial.
