Is there a "good" uncapped provider?

I have a 384kbps uncapped account with MWeb. Looking through these forums, I can find threads complaining about uncapped services/speeds/whatever in one way or another at one time or another for almost every ISP. Is no-one getting it right all the time? Why/how is the entire ISP industry in this country utterly failing to deliver uncapped? I raise this in reference to my ISP, MWeb, who many users seem very quick to attack. Are the "problems" with MWeb merely a symptom of the entire industry? For the record, I'm very happy *touch wood* with my MWeb account.

It all comes down to : You get what you pay for.
I have an IS Express+ Uncapped accounts and it works great for me as long as Seacom isn't down.
I also use an IS Business ADSL(Satellite) account at work and that runs great. But thats close to R3k/m
I think the problems with Mweb are just a symptom of the entire industry.
But I think most ISP's do make an effort to deliver a great product. Ive had gr8 support experiences with Axxess and Openweb during bad patches.

I think Openweb are the only ISP that have a uncapped package with no AUP/FUP linked to it. I believe it is the same as the Axxess Express accounts - after hours full line speed and throttled during working hours. I believe it was for R1299.00 a month when I last looked.

I am still waiting for an ISP to bring out a true uncapped package with no AUP's or FUP's - Axxess, are you guys reading this!!

An AUP is also OK as long as it's clear. Eg for OW the R899 product is 200GB before shaping. Anyone who thinks they won't use more than that can go on such a product without fear of being banned, or having to use his line 24/7 (which can lead to a ban) to achieve his 100-200GB because of throttling and shaping. If you end up requiring more than 200GB and the shaping sucks on OW UNC Exp+ FUP account then you just go onto the R1299 account at R300 extra PM for more. I personally don't need more than 100-250GB pm.

I'm not entirely sure of what your argument
is today. Are you trying to plug MWEB again
or are you talking about uncapped in general?

The criticism that MWEB is getting is deserved.
If they can't take criticism, then they shouldn't
be in business.

What I don't want to see is a lot of hype about
'freeing' the web with some fake people driving
it on the forums and FB, without the substance.

If MWEB or any ISP advertises unlimited internet,
then they should provide it and not create or hide
behind terms.

There are companies that are more honest about
what customers could expect like what they
consider over-use and what will happen if they
go over the boundaries.

I get your drift PeterCH, the only reason why I went for an uncapped package was for the freedom of not having to check each day how far or how much you have downloaded. It sure looks like this is what I will have to do in the future. My only question then is this - If OpenWeb can have an after hours IS express account without AUP/FUP's, why can't any of the other ISPs do the same?
If Axxess would bring out a similiar package I would sign up in a jiffy - no questions asked. By the way - I have passed the 200G mark on my Axxess express account and still no shapping. But as you rightly say, it would help if we knew what the magical number was!! ;)

You get what you pay for. Simple as that. R539 just isn't enough to support a 4meg service properly. That's why Openweb's GOLD packages are doing so well. They are priced more realistically and you get better performance for it.

The AXXESS uncapped is also unshaped all
the time. It's just different in that way.

Sorry, but I don't understand. There is now an AUP/FUP policy on the Axxess accounts . From the 1st of August - I think. That is after hours now as well.

There's two different account types of that after hours uncapped. One for I think R899 with fup and one for R1299 without the FUP.

That I do understand. I am waiting to see what will happen with the Axxess accounts before I make my move. I have spoken with both Axxess and Openweb. I just don't believe in jumping ship every second day - Sooooo, I will play the waiting game for now. I am hoping that Axxess will also bring out an Express package with no AUP's - If they don't then I will be forced to move over to OpenWeb too. They(OpenWeb) assured me that they have no plans to add any AUP to their Afterhours uncapped package

Axxess UNCAPPED AND UNSHAPED accounts, in the fine print you are bound to the IS 20% usage policy where you will be shaped. If you get shaped then this is not a true unshaped account and users chose these accounts to avoid the IS shaping policies if I'm not mistaken? This is a prime example of false advertising as the product should rather be called Semi-shaped. Long story short "Yes our product is UNSHAPED, but you will be SHAPED if you download too much

Check out the detail of their uncapped offerings and you will see the 24 hour policy

What was MWeb's intention then in offering shaped uncapped with the existing T&C? Surely they must have anticipated that many users would download large amounts of data? Other ISPs have FUP relating to the amount downloaded and throttling, etc. and others are using the 80%/20% rule. Is MWeb's "termination" approach a desperate knee-jerk response or was this their plan all along to deal with "heavy" users? The "Internet Addict" account was released later -- almost as an afterthought?

What I think is Mweb gave us the cheap uncapped so we can "have a taste" of internet freedom. Now that its been around for 5 months, they are starting to boot people off ( with vague explanations and T&C's ) so people would sign up for the more expensive accounts.

I'm not too sure, but what is the pricing difference between the Internet Addict account and the uncapped offerings before 18th March?

My personal feeling is that MWEB rolled out uncapped knowing they would initially make a loss which we be recouped over time as the Telecomms landscape changed.
I think they underestimated users appetite for bandwidth though.
Also don't forget that the roll-out was necessitated by TOPTV going live.I bet MWEB would not have an uncapped product in the market right now if it were not for TOPTV but of course I could be wrong.....

Because of TOPTV?

Could you explain this a bit more? ( Never really read the news until a few months ago :D )

IIRC the Internet Addict account was launched later.

Ya, this is what I mean.

People got a taste of the good life and now they are being forced to go to the more expensive accounts.

OT: What does IIRC mean?

Addict is unshaped.
