Does anyone know whether any of the current crop of USB modems has the ability to take an external antenna? I live in a dodgy reception area and my E220 has just died, so I probably need to buy something else/better. What's the best of the current crop, also the most compact as this will be used for extensive travelling? And ideally could I hook it up to a pigtail from my essential Poynting data antenna? Would really appreciate firsthand advice, thanks!

Yup the E272 is good if you can find one. Otherwise poything have a coupling device that works with most of the stick usb modems (was made for the Novatel, but some of the Huawei ones fit). http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=ADPT-025

If size is not an issue then look at the B970. It's a router but you can also use it as a modem, but its about the size of a VHS tape (a little shorter).

The MC950D form Novatel is quite good. You need to buy an adaptor for the antenna though. But its compact and easy to travel with.
