Vacuum Tubes vs Flat Plate,
These are the two basic considerations when you want to choose a solar water heater for your house. There are tons of companies on the Eskom scheme today and all of them offer a variety of systems. The question is! Is there a right or wrong system?

The answer is simple..........NO!!!!!

Every single system listed on Eskom's site WILL work and WILL save you money. All of them carry at least a 5 year guarantee (an Eskom requirement) and all of them will give you value for money. Some systems are more efficient than others, some are more expensive, some are imported.....So how do you choose the right one.

I am dealing with solar quotations and potential customers on a daily basis and have had all the questions. It usually goes something like this....." I had XYZ Solar give me a quote and they say that Vacuum tubes are better" or " I had XYZ Solar give me a quote and they said that the pumped systems are better".

I will do a 4 part series on the main differences in systems. (Vacuum Tube vs Flat Plate, Pumped vs Thermosiphon, Direct vs Indirect, High vs Low Pressure, Large Geyser vs Small Geyser)

I will try and list facts of all the systems to help you decide...Starting with Flat plate vs Vacuum tube


Flat Plates
1) Older, but tried and tested AND developed technology
2) Works in much the same way as a the green house effect
3) Produced mainly in virtually all countries that produce solar collectors
4) They are well suited to higher ambient temperatures and work well in situations of consistently higher sunshine (SA, Australia, parts of USA.)
5) They take up less "roof space" since the actual heat collecting are is bigger.
6) Can reach easily 80-90'C in summer (in SA) - ( BUT who uses 90'C water anyway)
7) More rigid than most tubes, because of the more sturdy design
8) Can be cheaper than tubes
9) Frost protection needed
10) Easier to install and handle

Vacuum Tubes
1) It is true that its the newest technology
2) Works in much the same way as a Thermal Coffee Mug
3) Produced mainly in the East but also by some European manufacturers
4) They are well suited to cold ambient temperatures and work well in situations of consistently low sunshine (parts of europe, canada etc.)
5) They take up more "roof space" to yield the same result as flat plate collectors (because of the drastic reduction in actual absorber area)
6) Can easily boil water in summer months (in SA)
7) When the vacuum is lost it looses its efficiency (something you may only pick up a lot later)
8) Can be cheaper to install than Flat plates
9) Virtually frost resistant
10) More parts (manifold plus 10 to 32 tubes)

So both has pro's and con's ....In my opinion the flat plate(and its sort of proven by facts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_thermal_collector#Evacuated_tube_collectors ) is much more suited for South African climate. We have a lot more sunny days than cloudy ones, our ambient temperature is high throughout the year, in winter months we still have warmish mid day temperatures(only the evenings and mornings are freezing cold) and its more rigid- since we live in Africa and Africa is not for sissies....

TLDR

Every single system listed on Eskoms site is overpriced by a factor of at least 2 in my opinion.
 
2 family friends have the system installed (1 flat, 1 tubes). They report vacuum tubes produces *much* warmer water.
 
I had the vacuum tubes installed more than a year ago. We are a family of two and it works well...huge savings in electricity.
 
I had a Safrelec 200lt direct pumped system with two flat panel collectors installed for R21 752.84-R9 331(Escom subsidy)= R12 421.84 early in January 2011.
Warranty on panels is 15 years and 5 years on the geyser. Some indirect geysers have a 10 year warranty.

Since installation, even with all the rainy days in Pretoria, the power consumption until today was 3.11 KWh. This was measured and not guessed.

So far am happy, but will see over a year.

How long would you say it is going to take to recover the cost?
 
We had a flat plate system (2 panels of 2 sq m each) installed 3 years ago at a cost of R12 000. Didn't bother about Eskom since my plumber manufactured the units and fitted them. They connect to my regular HWC which is above the top of the panels, so I don't need a pump. Then, there is a timer on the electrical water heating system (a Daikin heat-pump) that allows it to come on between 20h00 and 22h30 in summer and 15h00 to 22h30 in winter.

Electricity consumption reduced from 330 units a month to 180 in summer and 280 units in winter. The cost recovery will take about 55 months at 2010 rates.
 
Thats the part that everyone seems to miss.... there is a period of a few years before these systems actually start being "profitable" since you have to pay them off over time with the savings in your electricity bill.

But I still maintain the systems in this country are too expensive by a factor of at LEAST 2... if not more.
 
Agreed that these systems is way overpriced.
Did my flate plate install 3 years back and it cost R7,500 with new geyser.
I do not even switch it on during summer :)
In winter I have to switch it on after a few cloudy or rainy days.
 
I will be starting to investigate importing one from overseas... Figure I can get one for less than a system would cost AFTER the Eskom rebate.
 
I can not really understand why the fook ESKOM who is like Telkom, a monopoly, in the business of selling electricity would actively want to contribute towards their customers making less use of their services? Unless its just a PR stunt to justify their 100% increase in pricing after 4 years

Who cares? I will have hot water when there is no power. DOH

According to my calculations the system would be FULLY paid for after 3-4 years.

Yeah, 3 - 4 years before its PAID for.... and only then does it start actually SAVING you any money at all....

So they don't save you money from the get-go.. only after a period of time.
 
Nope, if you currently pay for example R500/month on your SWH, and it's saving you R500/month on your water and lights account, you are pretty much breaking even. Now, when electricity goes up by 30%, you will still be paying your R500/month, but you'll be saving R650/month. And so on and so forth.

Once the system is paid for, you'll be saving a lot of money without any outlay, so "pure profit"

My system I have is currently almost paying for itself, once the next increases go through I'll actually be saving money in terms of what the cost of the system and my utility account is, compared to what I would have paid on the utility account if I didn't have the system.
