I want to buy a sim card to test out a 4G/ LTE modem that I got sent from overseas. Is there a specific sim card I need or can it be any old sim card from any shop? Also what else do I need? Data?

First check what bands the modem operates on, then you can decide which provider to use.

According to this article: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/cellular/61466-iphone-and-ipad-lte-support-in-sa.html (not sure if that is 100% current however)

Vodacom and MTN are planning to launch LTE services in the 1,800MHz band, while Cell C will use their 2,100MHz spectrum for LTE.

.....
.....

8ta will launch its LTE trial using 2300Mhz spectrum.

MTN I guess. Was in a MTN shop yesterday but the guy kept insisting their sim cards don't work in anything that doesn't get sold from their shop. I think he just wanted to sell more stuff.

If it's got a SIM slot, and it adheres to standards, then surely it must work....

Go to Checkers and buy a SIM card from them. Less hassle. Remember to RICA it though ;)

Sales staff invariably insist 'their' modems will only take 'their' SIMcards -- which is patently not true in most cases (except perhaps for Cell C which uses a rather unique frequency range?)

8ta - you need an LTE SIM CARD to be enabled
CELL C - you need an LTE SIM card to be enabled

Vodacom - I heard you need to contact the data helpdesk and provision the simcard to be LTE activate - That what i heard last time that it is now open to the general public.

MTN - not sure

Vodacom will only enable the sim for standard contracts, no Top Up or Prepaid.

With Cell C you have to buy an LTE sim , which comes with a modem, and they will not enable existing cards, and I have been through this.

cheapest LTE modem?

Cheapest way to get a good modem is to get the E3276 that comes with the Cell C launch bundle (R2999 incl 100GB).

Note that this modem does not work with many routers, it is too new - I am using it with a Dovado Tiny router.

Edit : Note that Cell C LTE is on trial and only works in limited areas.

Like he mentioned the best deal is CELL C some places overseas sell this device for $399 on it's on.

I am sure you are just paying for the device and the data is complimentary as it is a trial phase and cell c at any time may discontinue or terminate the service at any time.
