Is there a speed difference between the different ISP's?

I'm thinking of going to ADSL and using Telkom as my service provider, but I'm not sure if it's a fast as the other ISPs around. Can anyone maybe tell me if an ISP like M-Web will be faster than Telkom?

Depends on what you want to do with your connection.
Telkom Shaped = Fastest Browsing and Downloading, bad game latency unless you are planning to only play on SAIX.
UUNET = Fastest overseas gameplay and their link to Australia is unbeaten. Local gaming is bad (Compared to Tekloms).
MWEB = Unknown - Somebody else gotta opinion on MWEB?

Other than UUNET and I.S, no one else uses their own backbone. MWeb and any other ISP (or VISP) offering ADSL accounts is basically just a reseller for Telkom's ADSL accounts. All on the SAIX backbone.

UUNET has an uncapped/unshaped option for around R720(incl VAT) whereas no other ISP can offer you that without going through a VPN or a Proxy.

You make the choice.

AFAIK I.S. has not launched their own ADSL service yet. So basically you have a choice Telkom/SAIX, or UUNET

I myself cannot tell the difference, I've got one Melkhom account and one from a local ISP which I believe sources their bandwidth from I.S, and I can only speak from a Downloading point of view as I am not an online gamer ... as yet .. :D . so in terms of downloading I'd say there's little difference if any at all I average @ 38 kb/s on both ISPs.

B.T.W what should be the accepted average among the 384Kbps connection?

usually about 90% of the 384kbps.... so even though 384kbps max is 48kb/s, accepting 90% of that, is around 43kb/s

Same for 512k, max 64kb/s. 90% = 57kb/s

etc etc etc

You won't see any reference on their site. And no, it's not only for business users. Unlike Storm and other ISP's having a business option for that, it's just a plain old account you buy from them. No PC/Gateway, no VPN, no Proxy... just an account (like your SAIX one now) that you pay R720 a month for.

The accounts are really only available to resellers (VISP's) and is currently still in the testing and development phase (as such bandwidth is still being bought, the service fluctuates between really good and not so good, etc.).

You can get one of these accounts through WebAfrica (http://www.webafrica.co.za) which is the ISP I'm using at the moment. They were very fast at enabling the account and took only about 30 minutes from signup for it to be activated.

When I signed up the account was R714 incl. VAT, however, I've noticed they've taken the price off, I'm not sure why, but atm that's all I know.

You have to actually add the item to your basket and hit checkout to see the price.
We removed pricing because at the moment we have reached our full capacity so we aren't really offering ADSL accounts, however UUNet is busy upgrading their lines so shortly (anytime from now to 72 hours) that will change. We will be updating our website with the new pricing and information then as well.

Check that out - WebAfrica have hit their limit, AND THEY STOPPED SUPPLYING.
WOW. I'm impressed.
Others would probably have abused the network for profit.

@ FireFli - It's is available anywhere you can get Teklom ADSL. You still have to get the Teklom line, and then WebAfrica's thing is the ISP part instead of using Teklom / MWEB / Whomever as your ISP.

Thanks Stoke, might buy 1 month to see how the gaming ping times are. Not this month though, had to shell out for 2 copies of WoW :o

FireFli - pm me - i'll ping/test whatever you want on UUNET. Don't go throw money away just to test. Anyways, like the man said, they're still setting it up and everything will change in the future, so a test account now is a waste of time, though, I did enjoy gaming overseas again.

What limit?

Max users allocated to a segment of bandwidth.
At 512 kb/s, on a 11 GB/s line you can only have so many users running concurrently before the service quality deteriorates.
I don't know the actual figures though.

*frowns* I spoke with UUNET and they said although they reached the original limit for the bandwidth allocated to this, they have sufficient bandwidth to handle the influx of users and that the service won't deteriote. Although the guy did say that bandwidth would not be garunteed (sp)
