Is there any point in using Internet Directories?

When I made my first site I spent hours registering it on every internet directory I could find.
But now I see it as being really pointless.

It seems to me that those Internet directories have zero SEO value.
They're just sites with thousands of outgoing links and no incoming links.
They've got no specialized content of any kind, no topic of focus.
No one is interested in going to a directory site.
The only use a directory site has ever had for me was giving me the phone number for a business that doesn't have their own site.

Surely its much more important to get links from sites relevant to your subject material?

Bottom lins, is it worth the effort?
Then the next question:
Are there any local directories of value?

According to THIS google likes directories like http://dmoz.org. This same oke raves about some keywords he uses on his site later on and but if you try and find him using said keywords his website is nowhere to be found on google so I'll take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

If this directory is as important as he makes it out to be, try it. I want to register my site on there when I'm back at the office to see if it works.

That article is old and not current at all. These directories dont count for much if you want to be ranked high in search engine results and lets face it, most people go to a search engine to look for something. The new buzz word you are after is SEO, look up articles on that and that would help your indexing if you are concerned about that. pm me if you want more info and I'll chat to some of the guys that does it here.

I'll never in my life advise anyone with any form of dev experience to pay for SEO, I was quoted 10k setup and 7k per month for the labour I have done myself. Best trick I have learnt so far is having a free audit done on my site weekly by these so called SEO companies to find out what else I can do.

Only thing I won't risk doing myself is Adwords campaigns, there I believe you need some form of experience.

If you develop software then having a downloadable version is key. Make use of the PAD file system to distribute it.

Yep, SEO is much better and there just happen to be a nice recent thread on mybb as well on it. With adwords buying the main words are quite expensive, so what the guys do here is that they buy up less common words that are specific to the product they want to sell. They had better success that way and cost much less.

Thing is, how many people out there have gone into the mentality of ignoring the sponsored links as they mostly contains BS? I've become blind to those results. I think getting your site onto the banners placed on specific sites is the way to go, I have read google allows you to target such campaigns but finding it in the Adwords maze is impossible.

IMO, google is where it is for providing good content to their users, if your content is good google will provide you to their users and that one of the reasons my site is ranking. Go take a look at some products(proud of the content of my apple products) and compare them to the content of my compitition? You see that most of these okes only provide the technical specs of Product X as it is stated on the price list where I have a nice HTML descriptions repeating my keywords and generating other possible searches.

My site got where it is through communities sharing knowledge I would otherwise had to pay for and that's why I'm not afraid to share my methods.

Oh and link building, BS! I've got a link in my sig, a link in my email and a link on Facebook...

I know it works and there are massive amounts of people using it daily, but for me it just isn't worth paying that much. Proper SEO is getting me around 50 unique visitors each day, which IMO isn't bad considering I registered the domain in December.

Also, my site is a computer store with thousands of products that constantly change which results in k@k baie keywords and campaigns which just isn't feasible. For my hosting company I'll gladly set up an campaign as there won't be too many keywords.

It all depends on the competition of the keyword you are trying to promote. If you are targetting a keyword with alot of competiton ie. 1 mil + relevant results then link building and other forms of SEO are beneficial. I had a site where with proper link building campaigns I was around page 3 on google for a high competition keyword.

There are many other factors of course, content is king. Once i stopped updating the site and ceased all the link building I dropped to page 30 over about 6 months.

Ive found linkage the best for my google seo. The better the site that links back to you, the higher your ranking. However, they got to be sites themselves with a good page rank.

That's one of things that help me in my industry, my website needs to be updated weekly with new products and old products are constantly dropped. As far as ppc goes, most of the keywords I have identified along with Roi media dont have too much compitition so the cost per click is around R2-R3. Problem is maintaining your campaigns along with a website that changes almost daily...

That why I spend all my time on targeting my SEO at the correct audiences and ensuring my website is optimized to the max as I need to new pages to be ranked as soon as possible.I find the SEO industry very fascinating as it differs so much depending on your business: service driven companies love their ppc but for someone like me offering massive amounts of products SEO is the primary focus.

There's one thing people must never forget though, content is king and google knows how to identify quality content. Make sure your page offers the info people are looking for when they google a products/service.
