Is this a good BitCoin Miner rig?

Hi all, Ive recently taken an interest in BitCoins and I need some advice.

We have a second PC at home that will be doing the mining and the specs are:

CPU i3- 3220
2GB Ram 1333MHz
Standard Mobo (H61) (May need to upgrade)
Standard PSU (upgrade needed)

Now for the main part of the Rig, the Graphics card I have a choice of the Asus MATRIX-R9280X or the ASUS MATRIX-HD7970

Remember we are not talking about gaming, we are talking about mining...

Not sure you'll get a reply to your satisfaction here :\. Try Carbonite. There was quite a large BitCoin thread there a while back. Would post link but working from phone.
 
I'm not a bitcoin miner myself, but I'd reckon the best bang/buck card is the R9 280x @ R3,800: http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolo...it-pci-express-3-0-desktop-graphics-card.html

If you're serious about it, then get a CrossFire capable motherboard and big PSU.
There are quite a few people who are running like two or 3x HD7970's in a single PC, but then it becomes very expensive.

Pretty sure that GPUs are yesterdays news when it comes to mining and you will never make a profit out of it. You need one of those dedicated asic mining rigs now, they are roughly 50x better value for money in terms of the hash rate they get
 
GPU's are a waste of time, tried mining with the 7970 but the wattage draw would mean I end up paying my profit out on electricity, ASIC's are the way to go.

I was told that it's been the better part of a year now that GPUs no longer offer an advantage for mining. In fact, unless you build a mother of a machine that's capable of running exceptionally fast, you're going to make a loss between the components and the electricity.

Agreed, with the 7970 I was generating 0.00004 BTC's per day, but consuming over 200W, so even with plenty GPU's it will take you so long to justt break even (if that is even possible) that it is a waste, even worse when you get into the higher bracket of R1.50 per unit of electricity then you will start losing big time.

I would love to import one of those cards from Butterfly labs, but for 50k, don't know if it would be worth the risk and by the time I get it there may be so many out there that it takes forever to just recover the cost.
 
GPU mining is not feasible at all unless you're getting free power & have loads of GPU's to mine with. Even then, you're unlikely to get a decent return on investment. I would suggest mining XPM with the CPU & using a few USB miners, like the bitfury or asicminer to mine bitcoins. With my rig, I get around 1.4gh/s & +- 3 XPM/day. My earnings are then used to play the market on BTC-e. (I earn more from the market than mining :) )
