Hi. I saw this tripod at stax and it's R550. Is it a good beginner Tripod?

The tripod looks solid in the photo, but as a rule, tripods are always worse than they look.
What you must remember about a tripod is that if you buy a good one, you can keep it for 20 years.
You will hear over and over again that Manfrotto tripods are excellent I bought an entry level Manfrotto for R800 or R900 about two or three years ago and its amazing. A friend bought a cheaper imitation which looked solid but its not loose and rickety, and one of the clips has broken.
Do yourself a favour, buy a Manfrotto, easier to sell, easier to find new heads, spares etc. for, and excellent quality.

Thank you for your advice. I actually saw a Manfrotto Tripod with a ball head at Incredible Corruption for about R550 as well.
Maybe I'll go and have a look at that one again.

If you're referring to the Manfrotto MKC3-H01/H02 Ball head pistol grip tripod, I can highly recommend it.
It's between R500 - R650 and it is sturdy, light and the pistol grip is a winner for either photos or video.
It's a very good entry-level tripod.

I'm using a Nikon D3100 and the 70~300mm DG Sigma lens. And also have the normal stock 18~55mm lens.
I would not leave my gear on that flimsy thing, even just to take a photo
Yeah - I need to park a camera behind goal next week and I think I'm going to have to find some other method.

Well I need a fluid head tripod, thinking of getting a monopod for now though.

Decided I'm going to take a hacksaw to an old National Geographic tripod I have. It doesn't see much use in its current form.
WTF? Pics please...
I had to strengthen the ball head with a hose clamp to get it to support the weight better - this is why I rarely used it as a camera tripod - and that means I have to pack a screwdriver in my kit bag but it's strong enough and has a fairly broad base.

How steady is that thing?
With the clamp, very. I lined the inside of the ball case with a little sandpaper for added friction. As long as it can stay in place for say 90 minutes I'll be happy since I can't adjust it during a match.
If my trigger cable arrives by this weekend I'll play around with it during IronMan.
