Is this a Wifi issue or a router issue?

I have a 100/100 mb fibre line with Cool Ideas who run on the Vumatel infrastructure in my suburb.

Doing some speed tests - I get two different results; depending on the device I use.

This speed test was done on my MBP which is less than 30cm from the router:

This test was done on a PC which is connected to the same router via a LAN cable:

The router was a freebie that I got from Cool Ideas: http://www.tp-link.com/in/products/details/cat-9_TL-WR840N.html

Which states: 300Mbs. So, quicker than my Fibre line.

What gives?
Do I need a better router (Quality wise) or faster router?

I also find that my WiFi on the router is iffy with the download but like yours the uploads fly... very strange. But check your 2nd link, it's the same as the first...

Router sucks, it doesn't even have 5GHz, a new one will fix your issue.

Wifi is always bad non reliable, best is to hard wire, but with phones tablets...ai wifi is a problem..
 
Could be a mac problem? 2 mil results if I search for macbookpro slow wifi. Have you tried a cable to the mac or another device over wifi?
 
That's pretty much the limit of 2.4ghz WiFi, get a better router.

You'll never get the same speed as a cable connection though.
 
Yea the supplied router for the 100Mbps package is not ideal, I would think they would at least provide you with the same router as you get on the 200Mbps package which is AC.

From the get go I installed my own router and WiFi AP, went with an Edgerouter X and Unify AC Pro and can't be happier, can max my line out over WiFi throughout my house.

That's not how wireless works unfortunately. You will never get that advertised speed. If you get 60% of the advertised speed you are lucky, but work on 50%, and for each device you add to the wifi network then half that speed again...

Get a AC capable router to fix that speed issue

It's a wifi issue. Get a 5Ghz AC Router

As others have mentioned, WiFi is misunderstood. I'm simplifying a bit in the following.

The router you are using is actually a pair of 150Mbps antennas. So any one device can only feed off of 1 transmitter.

There a a bunch of WiFi standards, but these 2 are the ones we'll discuss: 802.11n and 802.11ac. There is also b/g, but they are much slower.

Due to WiFi overhead in 802.11n, (error correction, signalling and the like) the best you can realistically expect is 50% of the rated speed @150Mbps, is 75Mbps. Whicj your upload is reaching.

2ndly, WiFi is subject to environment conditions. Inteferance is a major factor in reducing speed.
Other wifi devices, microwaves, bluetooth, reflection, poorly insulated wiring, sunlight(!), these all cause interance, espectially on the 2.4Ghz band (which is all you're router supports.
Get an app to tell you what WiFi channel is most open and best for you to use. Try NetSpot Free or Wifi Analyser for Android (by farproc). Apple phones, I just don't know.

5Ghz is much cleaner beacuse less things use it, its further away from common natural EM sources, and gets blocked-out by most materials (Trees act like a sponge)

In certain areas, my wireless is quicker than my wired
