Is this actually congestion?

So I've been told that Telkom's ESR in my area is congested. But I'm wondering if that's actually the problem.

shows a ping to Google.

what's interesting to me is the latency isn't too bad, but the number of dropped packets is pretty high.

So I'm wondering if it's a line issue or indeed congestion. I've tried reporting a line fault with Telkom, but it gets closed (twice) without anybody coming to the premises.

If anybody is in the know, I'd appreciate some input!

Try a pathping to that address rather. That extended ping of yours doesn't show anything except that there's a problem somewhere.

+1 Though personally I like to see both. The traces sometimes have weird readings in them.

No its utterly crap. Thats a local server so over ADSL you should see <30ms latency. I get a consistent 14ms to the server & you should get something similar.

Which ISP & how sure are we that there isn't something downloading/updating in the background?

But yeah on the whole...high likelihood of congested exchange.

I've got an uncapped account with bot Afrihost and MWEB. MWEB gives me better results, so I'll be using them I think.

There is most definitely nothing downloading in the background - I've got the standard Windows tasks running and that's it.

I've also just called to get my port refreshed, and same story.

After some cable theft I was stuck with congestion for three months...
Weekdays, 4.30pm to 11pm, Weekends 7am till 10pm. I was rather surprised that people are flocking to the net at 7am on a weekend.
