Is this (career) suicide?

Remember that most managers owe their loyalty to their bosses, not the people under them.

Don't let them contact your current manager. If you don't get the job you are going to be sidelined for promotion and possibly suffer from constructive dismissal leaving you unemployed.

Well I spoke to my manager and asked him if he would provide a reference. He said sure.

Hope he keeps his word. I would've just given more references with phone numbers or email addresses that are valid.

What I would have done in this case is ask the company to provide me with an offer letter conditional upon the reference by your current employer. I had it with a previous company also where I had no other referrals but I said okay then you may contact them but that's only if you are very solid about making me an offer, otherwise you're going to jeopardise my current relationship. It worked out fine then because they called, my current at the time manager had nothing but good to say about me, and then he came and talked and we parted amicably.

I was told by a recruitment company that it's against the law to give a bad recommendation.

Not sure how that works though as that deceives the point?
They no longer call them "recommendation" letters.

It's a "reference" :)

A company once phoned me in reference to a previous employee, who applied for a position there. They kept me busy for over an hour, asking a lot of in-depth questions.

Would've been much easier and quicker if I said from the start, that I don't know him. :D Damn, my good nature.... (I heard he got the job, wonder if he knows about my effort)

At least you helped someone out which is great. One days someone can help you out ....

Update on my part.

After asking my manager, he went to the executive he reports to and told him. The news spread like wildfire amongst the exco. Within 24 hours, the company counter offered - I haven't even got the call to attend the other interview yet. I have it in black and white that I will get a large increase and a promotion + an increase come annual increase review time.

Not quite the reaction I was looking for. I just wanted to explore the opportunity and see what it's about and what would be offered to me as I don't dismiss any opportunity that comes my way without considering it first. I'm just stunned at this point in time.

They obviously value you greatly.
Awesome!

Well the counter offer might be good, but he might now be seen as a flight risk and I'm not sure how it will affect his relationship with his manager...
