Is this coil whine? Can't be right

Received this GPU today, RTX 4080 Super from Woot.

It booted and started with this whine/droning sound, had to disable fan mode as it was driving me nuts.

I checked my cables, the fans are not hitting anything, I re-seated, quite a few things, not my first GPU, but the first one that sounds this bad and at that price. The support from Wootware was, scary, explained the whole thing, nada, so fat email en route tonight, probably only getting back to me Monday.

The RTX 3080 I had in didn’t make the noise, obvious reasons, different brand, fan et c.

With the 4080 S, its quiet on idle(no fans spinning) but once they kick in, on 30% it seems, this sound / droning comes through and stays there all the way up to 80% fan speed, after this its just pure airflow that you hear.

So it comes down to if I don’t want to hear the sound, I shouldn’t play a game (my wife’s dream)

Send everything back for confirmation - And they'll decide if its part of a warranty claim.

That means working from home is out, as my system is my work machine. As well, if they don't deem it 'faulty' they return it and I have to pay the courier fees

I know what coil whine is, but this does seem to be on the more extreme end.

Unplug your 3.5mm speaker/earphone from the pc case. If the coil whine is gone then it's EMF interference.

Not coil whine. I've had my fair share of coil whine and it's only when the GPU is under load and not at idle.

That sound is 100% fan related as you said it disappears when you "disable fan mode".

Does it get worse when the speed increases? Is it easily audible when the side panel is closed and you aren't sticking your ear/phone within 5cm of it?

Palits are not known as the quietest brand too.

More like the sound ticks faster but the wind force takes over when it touches 80% fan speed

More and more I’m leaning towards bearings or bad fan

I have friends with the exact same model card and theirs is as quiet as they come.

When I sent mine, both gents said no, they don’t have that on their cards
