Is this distributor done for?

I meant the other side, where the HT leads plug in to it.

Oh right. I will check that again. They didn't look bad, i could see shiny metal but i think there was some white on it, maybe corrosion from the wire contacts that came off...
 
If you are 100% sure it is only on a single cylinder and ruled out the ignition system, then( although is affects the diesels of that generation more) it could be that the tappets need some adjusting. Just throwing it out there.( A compression test will show you.)

How did the car run before it stood? Was there perhaps a reason why it was not being used? Like perhaps this problem you are having?

It was my fathers car so not 100% sure and i can't ask him because he passed away last year.
He did drive it though, if i remember correctly the issue he had with was with the brakes, power steering and a short on the electrical side because the battery kept running down while parked.

I'm planning on buying a compression tester when i go to get the plug leads and distributor cap so i can test the compression.
 
So i found the reason for the car not starting. It's one of the few times where staring at a problem for a hour paid off in my experience.

I"m not sure what it's called but for lack of a better word the intake boot between the carb and the engine's intake manifold has cracked all the way around around. I'll have to replace that and see if any of the missfires is still present.

I suppose it explains the steady deterioration of the cars idle. It was probably initially only a small crack and then with the vibration of the engine it cracked all the way around.

Yup that wouldn't help. Engine needs a very specific mixture, that crack will be buggering that up.
