Is this laptop worth buying?

The Dell is a really decent machine. Big question is: what's the main purpose for buying this laptop?
 
Don't think you have to worry about upgrading to DDR4, just get 16GB of DDR3L memory in the laptop and you can leave it. There upgrade to DDR4 isn't that great an improvement.

Development and heavy office use 40 odd tabs in Chrome office etc

I'm curious - what kind of "office use" requires 40 chrome tabs? :p

I'd get rid of the discrete gfx and get one with a proper ssd rather

Nah. The MSI is better specced in my opinion, better cpu, better ram, better graphics, plus I'm adding a msata SSD

For your usage scenario, the differences in the CPU and graphics is much of a muchness. The DDR4 RAM is better in theory but in reality, the the extra 8GB from the Dell will serve you better in heavy multitasking, running your 40 tabs and maybe the odd virtual machine or two.

I'm also looking at the next 5 years.

The MSI can upgrade to 32Gb ram

The MSI can upgrade to SLI

The MSI has a better CPU for multitasking

The MSI has msata for an additional SSD and internal 1TB upgradable to 8TB

The MSI has a brighter better screen

The MSI is capable of running 2 external screens

I'm just getting a lot more value here

Then budget for an SSD. The laptop doesn't need to come with one, it's 5min to swap out, but will help so much with productivity.

As for the DDR3 question, there's nothing G with getting it now. Especially if you get one with 16GB ram, by the time you need 32GBs, you'd probably have sold the laptop and gotten a new one already.
 
You are comparing a -U cpu vs a -HQ cpu, kind of obvious which has the better performance if you want to squeeze everything out of your budget.

That was on the what, 2nd line of the product details?

I'm betting you like the looks of the Dell but want the specs of the MSI :P

Just save up for the ram/ssd upgrade later on
