Hi all,

I just wanted to know if it is normal for my ADSL to de-sync during a lightning storm, the lightning isnt very close to us (judging from the time between the lightning and thunder) but every time i hear it strike, the line loses sync.

You just seem to have the weirdest problems with your router, don't you :erm:

How is it wired up? Do you maybe have your line going into the power-plug and then to router (the "surge protector") or if it is straight from wall to router?

Wondering if maybe the lightning isn't causing something weird with your power, that maybe isn't enough for you to notice but is just enough to freak your router out a bit.

Starting to think these Netgears aren't as fault-tollerant as one would hope...

Do you have any other weird things that happen during lighting strikes? TV going hazy, maybe noticing any weird noise on the telephone line...anything.

Have you maybe tried running the line through the "surge protector" on the adapter, assuming your specific model has one? I don't like using it - it feels like one of those BS things to me, but maybe it actually could serve a purpose in areas where there is electric disturbance. We generally don't have lightning here... Just Eskom disturbances.

Although the strikes may not be close, it should theoretically be possible that they affect you if it pops close to exchange or near to the copper lines... I think.

Actually our line does become very noisy when it rains hard, last night SNR was -1.2dB and fluctuating (I think something gets wet because it lasts for about 6 hours after the storm) now it's 22dB Maybe its got nothing to do with the lightning but more with the rain wetting something.

And i dont trust the surge protector, i also dont think (this model) will help a router, only a phone.

Hi There,
It may be electrical activity on the phone line over and above the norm. I did see it once or twice with my Netgear and they survived a lot of bad storms.

Regards
Tim

Mweb techie phoned me today, suggesting its a exposed wire from my house to the box in the street or between the exchange and the box.

This makes sense as I have a fault logged on my line for about 2 months now, intermittent disconnections, an exposed wire will drop sync randomly and when it rains cause havoc.

Now how TF are they going to find this exposed wire if the exchange is 2.2KM away

Well, damn... Could explain the line getting noise as well.

Are they going to get a Telkom tech out to look? They have their ways and means of finding the fault. I opened a thread a while ago as well RE Telkom suggesting that our problems were due to a bad/broken connection somewhere between office and exchange - they nogals found it quite easily.

They phone me like every day and they visit like every 3 days but they just leave to the exchange to fiddle, but now that mweb has this info of a possible line break they should find and fix it quickly.

At least you would hope so...
