so i charge my iphone 4 to 100% before i sleep, with no background programmes running at all i wake up at 6 am, my battery is at 7%. and its been on sleep mode the whole time. also during the day i charge it to 100% few hours later (9-10 hrs) i pickup my iphone and its dead i have to charge it again... surely there is something wrong with my iphone 4's battery life.

im thinking of taking back to vodacom (where i bought it) to get a new battery or the apple store if its possible to replace a battery for iphones.

Yup something is wrong there. Mine charges overnight, is online and busy all day and is still at between 30 - 40% when it goes for its next charge.

Questions
1) How old is the phone?
2) What iOS version are you running?
3) Have you tried turning off the location services?
4) Have you done a power cycle? Press and hold lock (power) and home button together until the apple logo shows and then disappears. Then power the phone on again.

Hi there, read up a lot about it as my wife got the 4S and the battery was not lasting a day. Basically do the Restore option in iTunes, and it then started to download an update (large). Says that it 'addresses battery issues' or some such. Basically, even though iTunes said that there was not an update available, it did download an update when choosing the Restore option.

All downloaded apps were still there, just had to redo some settings (e.g.: PIN for screen lock) but that was it.

Importantly, she is now able to go 24 hours without needing to recharge now. Just like my Galaxy S2!

1: got it in semptember 2011
2: iOS 5 atm
3: yes ive tried turning off the location services
4: no i havnt will try that now

Turn off 3G as well, I think there is a problem with the 3G, it kills the battery more then it should. I was at 100% last night, this morning I woke up to see 94%. That's not bad. Before with 3G on, I would wake up to see 70%.

So unless you have a dud battery it should still be good.
iOS 5.0.1 is supposed to include battery improvements so you should upgrade. So try 5.0.1 with the location services off.

Oh I had no idea they removed the 3G setting in ios 5.0.1 to be honest, I never used iOS 5.0.1 long enough to notice it disappeared. As soon as iOS 5.1 beta 1 hit the dev site I upgraded to that. The latest iOS 5.1 beta 3 does have the 3G option. I guess apple decided to put it back, probably because of all the complaints.

Edit: it seems that this is a 4S issue and not an iPhone 4 issue, I wouldn't know if the 4S has been resolved on iOS 5.1 as I am still on the 4

My iOS 5.0.1 has a 3G toggle unless you mean specifically on the 4S? I have a 4.

Awesome!

4s.

Ok. OP was a 4.
I saw similar symptoms when an app (imapmywalk) went rogue and kept running even when I killed it. It uses location and it took my battery from 100 to 30% in a few hours.
Reboot cured it.

When I got my 4S - battery life was an issue.
But after a few battery cycles - it seems to be a lot better now...
Although I am always weary of what applications I use.

My iPhone 4's battery life was definitely better then the 4S!!

How do you turn off 3G on an iPhone 4s? I can't find that setting anywhere...
As mentioned Apple removed that option in iOS 5; good news however is that Apple have reintroduced that feature in iOS 5.1 beta 3.

The battery life with iOS 5.01 is terrible re software bugs -- Since iOS 5.1 beta 2 there has been a significant improvement in battery life.
